The 2019 Purdue Invite kicked off yesterday, featuring the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, women’s 3 meter and men’s 1 meter diving. Louisville is currently holding substantial leads in the team battles, with host Purdue sitting 2nd in both. There was one NCAA A cut achieved during yesterday’s competition, coming with the Louisville women’s 200 free relay. Lainey Visscher  led the squad off in 22.72, and was followed by Casey Fanz (21.59), Avery Braunecker (22.31), and Christiana Regenauer (21.73) for a final time of 1:28.35. That time comes in just under the NCAA A cut of 1:28.43.

Purdue’s men knocked off Louisville in the 200 free relay, clocking a 1:18.40 to Louisville’s 1:18.54. The Boilermakers were able to gain an early lead and maintain it through the race, thanks to a 19.65 lead-off leg from Ryan Hrosik (Mihalis Deliyiannis led Louisville off in 20.02).

Sophie Cattermole picked up another win for Louisville in the women’s 500 free, posting a season best of 4:42.41. Cattermole won a tight race with teammate Maria Sumida (4:42.56), with Sumida holding the lead until the 350 mark. Louisville’s Hayden Curlow won the men’s 500, clocking in at 4:20.63 to win by well over 2 seconds.

Grace Oglesby picked up a win in the women’s 200 IM, marking the 3rd straight win for Louisville. Oglesby swam a 1:57. 93, winning the race by nearly two seconds. Oglesby has a personal best of 1:56.33 from last season. Purdue then snapped Louisville’s win streak when Trent Pellini won the men’s 200 IM in 1:44.81. Daniel Sos from Louisville was right behind in 1:44.86. Pellini won the race thanks to a 54.82 split on the 2nd 100, compared to 55.56 from Sos.

Casey fanz posted a huge season best en route to winning the women’s 50 free in 22.16. That time came in a whopping 1.35 seconds under her season best heading into this meet. Louisville took the top 5 spots in the event, with Lainey Visscher taking 2nd (22.26), Christiana Regenauer was 3rd (22.45), Arina Openysheva was 4th (22.64), and Nastja Govejsek was 5th (22.96). Lamija Medosevic from FIU tied for 5th. Pitt’s Blaise Vera roared to a 19.10 finish in the men’s 50 free , winning the event by .65 seconds. Vera now leads the NCAA with that time, at least for right now, as we’re just starting the mid-season invites. The time also marked a lifetime best for Vera, whose previous best was 19.24.

Louisville went on to win the women’s 400 medley relay by 5 seconds with a 3:34.77. Louisville also won the men’s 400 medley with a 3:08.26, beating Purdue by over 3 seconds.
