INDIANAPOLIS– Susan LaGrand of the Oakland University swimming and diving team has been named GEICO Horizon League Winter Scholar-Athlete of the Season the league announced Thursday.
LaGrand, a native of Rapids, Mich. is coming off a stellar sophomore season after being named Swimmer of the Meet, and Athlete of the Year at the 2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships.
During this year’s championships, LaGrand set five Horizon League records, and four pool records en route to the Oakland women claiming its 26th straight conference title. LaGrand swam to an impressive six first place finishes at this year’s championships.
This season LaGrand notched four Nike Horizon League Swimmer of the week honors, the most of any individual among the league.
LaGrand boasts a team-best 4.0 GPA and is pursuing a degree in health sciences. As a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll, LaGrand was also named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team. LaGrand was recognized as the Oakland University Athletics Student of the Month presented by United Shore for the month of October after swimming to seven first place finishes in the Golden Grizzlies’ regular season opener.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes at the conclusion of each of its three athletic seasons as the Scholar-Athlete of the Season. To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete of the Season consideration, a student-athlete must be a member of that sports current year all-academic team and is selected based on a combination of athletic and academic achievement by the League’s faculty athletics representatives.
