On the fifth day of the 2013 Australian Age Championships in Adelaide, South Australia, the record-breaking came to a pause; though there’s a few really good opportunities for records to be broken on the meet’s final day, for the first time of the meet, none were broken in Friday’s finals session.
Kyle Chalmers, who has been responsible for the number of those records, was still impressive in his one swim on Friday. He won the boys’ 14-year olds 100 backstroke in 58.19, ahead of Telopea’s James Hanson, who was 58.85 for 2nd.
In the boys’ 15-year olds 200 free, Damian Fyfe won in 1:51.90, pulling away from the field in the last 50 meters. That’s Fyfe’s second-straight win in the event, though last year it was in the 14-year olds’ race.
In the girls’ version of the same event, 15-year old Alanna Bowles of Rocky City swam a 2:01.09 for the win. At every level of this meet, we’ve seen great young 200 freestylers. As we mentioned earlier in the meet, the Australian 800 free relay was already fairly young, and with this much talent coming up, they should remain among the world’s best for Rio and well beyond.
Andrew Ryan from the Miami Swim Club in Queensland won the boys’ 12-13 50 free in 25.17, just ahead of Nicholas Keune in 25.29.
Georgia Bohl from St. Peter’s Western completed a sweep of the breaststroke races with a 2:31.80 in the 200. Thus far, the 100 seems to be her better race still, though this time was a bit slower than she was at this same meet last year. She’s likely among the group that’s targeting the World Championship Trials in a few weeks instead, despite being so young.
In the younger, 12-13 breaststroke, Caitlyn McKavanagh won in 1:12.67. This follows up her Queensland state title from late last year: the first for her Bracken Ridge club in over a decade.
James Traiforos won a very fast 15-16 boys’ 200 IM in 2:04.92. He was outstanding through the middle 100 meters of this race, which is where he opened up his entire lead over Hayden Hinds-Sydenham (2:06.97) and Joachim Bardrum in 2:07.47.
