7-time Olympic medalist Kirsty Coventry, who won back-to-back golds in the 200 backstroke in 2004 and 2008, has gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend Tyrone Seward.
Injuries and a year spent away from the water in 2010 kept her from the podium, but given the circumstances, a pair of 6th-place finishes in the 200 back and 200 IM were a great success for her in London.
She said of her engagement that it was “better than a gold medal”.
As for the questions of retirement for the 28-year old Zimbabwean, she had this to say to her country’s NewsDay: “I’m kind of torn. I think if I’d had the perfect season leading up to this, then I would have felt more comfortable saying I’m done.”
Coventry spent much of her adult career training in the United States. She went to college at Auburn, and after a time spent hopping around training locations in both Africa and Monaco, returned to work with Kim Brackin in Austin this spring.
