WOMEN’S 50 FLY

  • 2014 World Champion: Sarah Sjostrom (SWE), 24.58
  • World Record: Therese Alshammar (SWE), 24.38, 2009
  • Championship Record: Sarah Sjostrom (SWE), 24.58, 2014

Kelsi Worrell became the first American woman to break 25-seconds in the short course meters version of the 50m butterfly with a 24.94 performance to take the top seed after this morning’s heats.

The time broke Christine Magnussen’s 25.65 national record that she set at the 2012 short course world championships in Istanbul, Turkey by over half of a second.

Worrell now holds short course meter American records in both the 50, 100, and 200m butterfly events. She broke the 200 fly record last night andset the 100 fly record at the 2015 Duel in the Pool with a 55.42.

Worrell will swim in the semifinals of the 50m butterfly tonight, with hopes of making another final. She was the only swimmer this morning under the 25-second barrier, putting her in a great position moving into the semifinals.

So far, she’s been electric as a relay swimmer, taking home two gold medals in both the 4×100 free relay and the 4×50 medley relay. The latter of the two broke a world record last night prior to Worrell winning an individual silver in the 200m butterfly.

Kelsi Worrell has all 3 fly records in SCm usually you don’t see this since sprinters don’t always do the 200.
