Josh Liendo didn’t waste any time during his first event at Canadian Trials, soaring to a new Canadian record in the 100 butterfly during prelims. Liendo swam a 50.78 to shave 0.10 seconds off his 2022 national record of 50.88, which he swam at World Championships Trials.

Liendo – 2023 Liendo 2022
50 23.94 23.63
100 50.78 (26.84) 50.88 (27.25)

After winning the event at Trials in 2022, Liendo went on to win a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly at World Championships with a 50.97, slightly trailing his national record. He joined Kristof Milak (50.14) and Naoki Mizunuma (50.94) on the podium.

This swim is a huge season best for Liendo who has only raced the long course 100 butterfly at one meet this season prior to this one. In December 2022, Liendo swam at the US Open and hit a 52.80 in prelims before swimming a 52.48 in the final for second place. Liendo just finished his freshman season at the University of Florida where he picked up a silver medal in the 100 butterfly, silver in the 50 freestyle, and a gold in the 100 freestyle at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

A 50.78 makes Liendo the fastest man in the world this season, surpassing Shaine Casas‘ 50.80 from the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Pro Swim Series.

Liendo is the Canadian record holder in the 100 butterfly as well as the 50 freestyle, in which he holds a 21.61 from the 2022 World Championships. Liendo has raced consistently for Canada over the past couple of years, having raced at the 2019 World Junior Championships, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the 2022 World Championships, the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and the 2022 Short Course World Championships.

Liendo will lead the field into the final tonight and will likely book a spot on the World Championships team considering that he’s already well under the 51.96 FINA A cut. He will be joined by Ilya Kharun (52.66), Finlay Knox (53.06), Filip Senc-Samardzic (53.47), and Keir Ogilvie (54.06) as they vie for the silver medal and a FINA A cut.

Kharun is going to come after him tonight. He is more talented in the fly IMO.

Kharun is a better 200 flyer (Liendo doesn’t even go there). Liendo has Khan on the 100.

The 100 has way more of a power component. No chance Kharun touches him in long course just yet.

The downvotes are very bold.

Liendo is for sure the favorite but everyone in here is acting like Kharun didn’t go by Casas like he wasn’t even moving less than a month ago.

I could see Kharun pushing him the 2nd 50 and getting under 51.

What world are you living in? Casas pretty handily took down Kharun in the 100 Fly less than a month ago.

Would not be surprised if he’s close to under 50.
