Day two of the 2023 Irish Open saw 22-year-old Mona McSharry produce a new national record in the women’s 100m breast.
The University of Tennessee swimmer punched a time of 1:06.04 to now rank #2 in the world on the season. You can read more about her performance here.
Additional swims on the night included a double victory in the session by 24-year-old Max McCusker. McCusker took on both the men’s 100m free as well as the 50m fly, coming away with gold in each.
In the 1free, McCusker represented the sole competitor to get under the 50-second threshold, logging a time of 49.78 for gold. The 50m fly saw the Dolphins swimmer get it done with a result of 23.97.
The former time represents the 4th fastest time of McCusker’s career while the latter represents just the 5th time he’s been under the 24-second barrier.
16-year-old John Shortt also made some noise in the men’s 200m back, grabbing gold in a time of 1:59.23. That’s the first outing Shortt has ever dipped under 2:00, with his previous personal best resting at the 2:00.97 he put up at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet last month.
19-year-old Jack Cassin hit a new Irish national record in the men’s 400m IM. Cassin touched in a result of 4:22.57, knocking over half a second off of the previous standard of 4:23.22 Cillian Melly put on the books last year.
Cassin’s outing here represents a big-time personal best, blowing to bits his previous career-quickest result of 4:28.31 he posted at the 2022 U.S. Nationals.
John Shortt, 16 year old who was born in 2007 went a 1:59.23 200 Back, very exciting prospect for the Irish. For reference, it is only 2 seconds off the American 15-16 NAG set by Aaron Peirsol and he has the summer to get faster.
