IUPUI Men & Women Notch Victories At Home In Sweep Of Lewis

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming teams cruised to victories over Lewis University inside the Natatorium on Saturday (Oct. 2) with the men winning 187-73 and the women winning 179-78.

“What a special moment today for the team. Getting our first win at home against a solid team was a lot of fun,” head coach Damion Dennis said. “This meet was a good measuring meet for us. It gives us a chance to really evaluate where we are, how we are able to handle back-to-back meets and how we are doing in our training program.

“Overall, most of our races were faster today and that’s a reflection of our athletes. Special thanks to the parents, friends and alumni for coming out and supporting the Jaguars today.”

Emma Theobald was the star of stars, winning three individual events and contributing to the Jaguars’ 200 IM win to start the meet. After the 200 IM squad of Theobald, Ali SippelCaylee Hamilton and Lillian Brandt cruised to a relay win in a time of 1:47.57, Theobald followed with a win just ahead of Brandt in the 200 free in a time of 1:54.25. Brandt touched at 1:55.59 and Emmaleigh Zietlow finished third at 1:57.47. Theobald then cruised to an easy win in the 500 free in a time of 5:05.68 and closed her four swims with a victory in the 200 IM in a time of 2:06.78.

Sippel earned a pair of individual wins by capturing the 100 breast at 1:07.18 and 200 breast at 2:26.07. Brandt won the 100 fly (58.17) by more than two seconds and the 100 free (53.88) by nearly a full second. Other individual winners included Lauren Thompson’s three-second win in the 100 back as she touched at 59.14 and Zoe Hendrickx victory in the 200 fly at 2:11.17. Hamilton edged Avery Brooks in the 50 free with a time of 24.71 to Brooks’ 24.93 and Zietlow won the 200 back at 2:07.11.

The Jaguars’ 200 free relay team of Hamilton, Brooks, Thompson and Zietlow also flashed some speed with a time of 1:38.90 in the meet’s final event.

The men’s side got individual wins from eight different athletes, including multiple event wins from Logan KellyNick Dibley and Kevin Burke. Kelly won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.73 and followed with a win in the 200 breast at 2:07.26. Dibley won the 500 free at 4:46.60, just outgunning younger brother Luke Dibley’s time of 4:48.56. The elder Dibley also won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:54.81, touching more than three seconds ahead of his closest competition. Burke won the 50 free in a time of 20.85 and followed with a win in the 100 free at 46.68.

Other individual wins came from Nicolas Gallego in the 1000 free at 9:53.22 and Riley Lohse in the 100 back (51.25). Ben Kimmel won the 200 backstroke at 1:50.79 by more than two seconds and Spencer Jyawook breezed to a victory in the 100 fly in a time of 49.30. Jason Harary touched first in the 200 IM at 1:55.39, just ahead of Dane Charleston’s time of 1:56.69.

IUPUI’s 200 medley relay team of Lohse, Kelly, Jyawook and Burke won the opener at 1:32.34 and the 200 free relay group of Jyawook, Burke, Mihir Chandra and Wes Wickens finished with a time of 1:23.92.

The Jags won’t compete again until the Oct. 16 Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.

INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University’s men’s swimming team dropped its dual at Indiana University Purdue University Indianpolis (IUPUI) on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind. The Flyers are now 1-1 on the season while the Jags are also 1-1.

Lewis picked up its first event of the dual in the 200 yard freestyle as Ruben van Leeuwen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/CIU/Christelyk Lyceum Veenendaal) won the event with a time of 1:43.12. Filip Bjorkholm (Västerås, Sweden/Widenska)Russell Smith (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Erik Fosen (Joliet, Ill./) finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the event with times of 1:48.53, 1:50.41 and 1:57.16 respectively.

van Leeuwen also had a second-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 52.34 seconds while Carter Thoss (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Josh Moellenhoff (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) finished fifth and sixth respectively with times of 55.46 and 56.81 seconds. van Leeuwen was third in the 50 free at 21.36 seconds.

Mariano Sosa (Olavarria, Argentina/) had a second-place finish in the 200 back finishing in a time of 1:53.40 while Miguel Turcios (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Canterbury School)Kevin Soltys (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and Michael Roach (New Market, Maryland/Linganore) finished sixth, seventh and eighth with times of 1:59.60, 2:00.45, and 2:04.77.

Sosa also had a third-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 53.13 and a fourth place finish in the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:59.18. Turcios was fifth in the time of 1:59.53 and Smith was sixth at 2:03.31.

Jackson Mugg (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne East)Isaac Rolfsen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Homeschool)Rhys Taylor (Nottingham, England/National C of E Academy) and Michael Roach (New Market, Maryland/Linganore) finished third-sixth in the 1000 free with times of 10:03.82, 10:10.02, 10:12.08 and 11:10.63 respectively.

Turcios was also fourth in the 100 back with a time of 53.67 seconds while Soltys and Thoss finished seventh and eighth with times of 54.78 and 58.99 seconds.

The Flyers finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively in the 200 fly led by Bjorkholm with a time of 1:59.98, Ari Kissel (Berlin, Germany/) finished at 2:01.46, Moellenhoff at 2:07.72 and Lucas Mourao (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Presbiteriano Mackenzie) at 2:08.11.

Kissel took third in the 100 free at 47.70 seconds while Ethan Fox (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished sixth at 49.35 seconds, Smith was seventh at 49.69 seconds and James Gould finished eighth at 54.83 seconds.

Jabari Ramsey (Land O’ Lakes, Fla./Land O’ Lakes) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 59.30 seconds while Taylor finished fifth at 1:00.00, Alec Danko (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was seventh at 1:03.01 and Matthew Senese (Joliet, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished eighth at 1:03.30.

Lewis’ 200 medley relay team of Sosa, Ramsey, Thoss and Kissel finished third at 1:37.09 and the team of Soltys, Senese, Mourao and Adrian Wlodarz (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) was fifth at 1:38.97 and the team of Fox, Alec Danko (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central), Moellenhoff and Gould was sixth at 1:42.88.

The Flyer 200 free relay team of Wlodarz, van Leeuwen, Kissel and Fox finished at 1:26.20 while the quartet of Soltys, Turcios, Mourao and Smith finished at 1:31.16 and the squad of Roach, Jacob Przylucki (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), Gould and Fosen came in at 1:35.20.

Lewis is back in action next Saturday as it travels to Allendale, Mich., to take on Grand Valley State at 12 p.m. (CDT).

INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University’s women’s swimming dropped its dual meet at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis 179-78 on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. The Flyers drop to 0-2 while the Jags improve to 1-1.

Kiara Barnes (Cape Town, South Africa/) picked up an event win for Lewis winning the 1000 free in a time of 11:07.10 while Alessa Locke finished third in the event at 13:27.05.

Larissa Alves (Panama/) finished second in the 100 back with a time of 59.14 while Julia Lesnicki (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was fourth at 1:05.77 and Maddy Wagner (Hickman, Neb./Norris) and Marie Grzybek (Inverness, Ill./William Fremd) were sixth and seventh at 1:08.59 and 1:11.64 respectively.

Erin Bachmeier (/) tok second in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.69 while Melanie Patterson (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley)Cetta Senese (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Orla Clasby (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) finished fourth, sixth and seventh respectively with times of 1:10.76, 1:12.62 and 1:13.47. Bachmeier also had a third-place performance in the 100 free at 55.56 seconds while Fischer was sixth, Marsh was seventh and Varanauskaite took eighth.

Aubrey Fischer (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) was third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:23.03 and was followed by Megan O’Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) and Daniela Navarrete (Panama City, Panama/) in fourth and fifth in times of 2:28.18 and 2:31.56 respectively.

Madi Heckman (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence)Meghan Bandy (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) and Benita Varanauskaite (/) were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively in the 50 free and Heckman, Varanauskaite, Bandy and Marsh were fifth through eighth in the 200 free.

Lewis finished third through fifth in the 200 breast with Senese taking third at 2:36.79 while Patterson was fourth at 2:40.17 and Clasby took fifth at 2:40.45.

Barnes, Grzybek and Bandy finished third through fifth in the 500 free with times of 5:32.72, 5:48.59 and 5:50.26 respectively.

Fischer, Navarrete and O’Brien finished fifth through seventh in the 100 fly.

Cenese took fourth in the 200 individual medley at 2:23.37 while Clasby was sixth at 2:26.59 and Patterson finished seventh at 2:30.60.

The Flyer 200 free relay team of Alves, Marsh, Heckman and Bachmeier finished with a time of 1:43.57 while the quartet of Bandy, Fischer, Lesnicki and Navarrete finished at 1:47.28 and the squad of Barnes, Grzybek, O’Brien and Lynsay Humpage (LaSalle, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) came in at 1:49.79.

Lewis’ 200 medley relay team of Alves, Bachmeier, Senese and Heckman was third at 1:51.46 while the teams of Lesnicki, Patterson, Navarrete and Marsh were fifth at 1:56.40 and the team of Wagner, Clasby, O’Brien and Varanauskaite were sixth at 2:01.60.

The Flyers are back in action next Saturday as it travels to Allendale, Mich., to take on Grand Valley State at 12 p.m. (CDT).
