Iona Swimming Starts Season Strong With Victories Over Holy Cross

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Sparked by a large and enthusiastic crowd and racing for the first time since March, the Iona College men’s and women’s swimming teams both overcame large deficits to post wins against the visiting College of the Holy Cross.

The Iona men captured 12 of the possible 16 events and also took second place in another five events to win at 180-108.  The women had a back and forth meet, taking 10 of the 16 events and added another five second-place efforts for a tight 152-141 victory.

WOMEN’S MEET

The Iona women overcame a 32-0 diving deficit with a statement win in the opening 200-yard medley relay with Luiza da Silveira, Megan JosephsGrace Curry and Katherine Lee edging Holy Cross by 1.02 second at 1:51.78.

Juniors Tristan Urso, took the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:57.64; Luisa Da Silveira took both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events with respective times of 1:00.43 and 2;12.86; Taylor Spillman won one of the day’s closest races by .01 in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:13.15; Senior tri-captain Katherine Lee claimed two wins touching first in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.11 and in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:00.40. Sophomore Megan Josephs won the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:13.13 with junior Isabella Nicholson taking the day’s final race, the 200-yard individual medley at 2:12.65.

MEN’S MEET

The Iona men’s quartet of Spencer MoranMatthew LoftusConor Mullin and Chase Bateman took the 200-yard medley relay and never looked back.

Sophomore distance ace Michael Faughnan picked up where he left off last March, with a pair of wins in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle races at 9:31,36 and 4:31.10, respectively. Senior Daniel Hadary took the 200-yard freestyle at 1:45.03. Graduate student Spencer Moran, posted wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes at 52.18 and 1:55.28, as classmate Conor Mullin cruised to wins in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races at 50.57 and 1:53.30.

Senior Aidan Holbrook was first in both the 50-yard freestyle at 21.92 and 100-yard freestyle at 48.69 as classmate Jackson Madonia touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:59.78.

The Iona men’s team of Holbrook (48.05); Mullin (47.59); Moran (47.30) and Faughnan (46.19) posted a strong early season time in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:09.13 in the day’s final race.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“I was very proud of both our teams today, their energy and determination was outstanding and they were aggressive in every race, particularly when you consider the heavy early season training period work we are in now,” noted head coach Nick Cavataro.

“We had strong races up and down our entire roster and everyone was positive and knows they will have to keep their foot on the gas as the season moves on and strive to build off of today. We have some great leaders here, I’m confident that will happen,” he added.

UP NEXT

Both teams will be back in the pool Friday, October 15, when they return to action to host St. Francis Brooklyn at 2:00 pm at Hynes Center Pool.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Ayden Chanin won three individual events, but the Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team was edged by Iona 153-141 at the Hynes Center Pool. The Crusaders begin the dual meet portion of their season at 0-1, while the Gaels open the year 1-0.

Chanin had an outstanding afternoon by winning the 100-yard freestyle (53.47), the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.67) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.89). Sophomore Greta Walting also performed well, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.08) and coming in second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.66). Other event winners for Holy Cross were junior Abigail Bryant in the one-meter diving (215.10), freshman Ciara Scamby in the three-meter diving (230.74) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Walting, junior Rowan Burgess, junior Fiona Walsh and Chanin (3:41.40).

The Crusaders will return to action on Friday, Oct. 15, when they play host to Bucknell at 4:00 p.m.
