NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team made Homecoming special for themselves, coaches and fans with a first ever three victories in the same day.

MEET SUMMARY

The Iona women grabbed two wins on Saturday, including the first in program history against Wagner College and another against Sacred Heart University. The Iona men posted a win against Wagner for the second year in a row.

The Iona women defeated Wagner 130-93, while taking Sacred Heart 155-82, to raise their record to 3-1. The Iona men defeated Wagner 151.50-78.50, to enter the win column for the first time this season and now stand at 1-2.

Iona dominated the individual events on Saturday with both women and men touching the wall first on eight of the nine races as well as taking three of the four relay races.

On the women’s side in the 13-event format, Wagner took both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter springboard diving events before Victoria NovinskiyJulia MoserAshley Benkert and Megan Josephs combined for a season best 3:57.78 time in the 400-yard Medley Relay. The men’s quartet of Daniel HadaryEmil BajramovicLiam Pyatt and Chase Bateman posted a 4 second win in the 400 Medley relay at 3:31.17.

The 1000-yard Freestyle saw freshmen Katherine Sarnes win her first collegiate race combining with teammate Tristan Urso for a 1-2 effort with  times of 10:48.75 and 10:50.11 respectively. Junior Michael Faughnan touched first in the 1000-Free at 9:37.48, with freshmen Matthew Woyksnar third.

The 200-Freestyles Isabella Nicholson at 1:54.87 and Chase Bateman at 1:47.31 win.  The 50-Freestyle had Josephs and win at 24.95, as Wagner’s Adrian Aguirre at 21.74, held off Bajramovic, Matthew Loftus and Pyatt for the lone Wagner win.

The 200-Individual Medley had Novinskiy and Hadary win with respective times of 2:10.53 and 1:58.75. Ashley Benkert and David Son took the 200-yard Butterfly races at 2;13.50 and 1:59.72 respectively.

Nicholson won the 100-Freestyle at 53.38 as did Chase Bateman on the men’s side at 48.23.

Wagner’s Aura Vilarraso edged Novinskiy by .6 in the 200-Back at 2:06.00. The men’s race had Hadary touch first at 1:59.47. The 500-free had Urso and Faughnan win with respective times of 5:17.29 and 4:30.50, respectively.

The 200-Breaststroke had Josephs and Bajramovic win at 2:28,05 and 2:10.36.

Freshman diver, Dylan Riccio, had a back and forth battle with Wagner’s Carter Green, taking second on 1-Meter by 4-point and by 5-points on 3-Meter.

COACHES’ COMMENTS

Speaking of the meet Coach Nick Cavataro commented, “this was a great day for our men and women. To come away with 3 wins, some fast times and experience a big and loud homecoming day was a great thing for our group.”
