NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Fresh off a six-day training trip, which featured some of the semester’s most challenging workouts, the Iona College men’s and women’s swim team swamped the visiting Adelphi University Panthers today in a dual meet at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool.
Winning fourteen of the fifteen events contested, the Iona women rolled to a 189-75 victory. The men touched first in all 14 events en route to a 158-47 win. The triumph raised the women’s season mark to 7-3 and the men’s record to 6-2.
Leading the charge for the Iona women with a pair of wins each was Grace Curry (100 and 200-yard butterfly); Kate DiRaimo (100 and 200-breaststroke); and Taylor Spillman (1,000-free and 200-individual medley).
Other winners included: Luiza Da Silveira (100-backstroke); Kate Flynn (100-freestyle); Isabelle Pabon (200-freestyle); Meghan Pattison (200-backstroke); and Simone Sturrup (50-freestyle).
On the men’s side, Matthew Anderson touched first in the 500-freestyle and 200-individual medley. Emil Bajramovic grabbed the first two wins of his career in the 100 and 200-breaststroke. Daniel Hadary took the 200 and 100-freestyle races, while Spencer Moran touched first in the 100 and 200-backstroke events. Conor Mullin took the 50-freestyle and 100-butterfly.
Other winners on the men’s side included James Whaley (200-butterfly) and Robert Wisniewski (1000-free).
The men and women hit the pool again on Wednesday, January 15 as they square off against inter-county rival, Pace University, at 5:00 pm at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool.

Garden City, N.Y. – After returning back to Nassau County following a training trip to Florida, the Adelphi University swimming and diving programs competed on back-to-back days to kick off the 2020 portion of their seasons.
On Saturday, the teams traveled to Iona College but dropped the dual meet to the Division II Gaels. On the women’s side, Iona took top swims in 14 of the 15 contested events, to earn a 189-75 win as the host men secured a 158-47 victory. Skyler Nenadich was able to rack up points for the Panthers as the lone diver, accumulating 228.05 points on six dives.
Back in their home lanes, the teams celebrated the six members of the graduating class on Sunday, before hosting the College of Saint Rose. Emma Brown, Jessica Giuliani, Jeshley Jimenez, Theresa Mattei, Lauren Oleksiw and Kristen Tzavelis were all recognized prior to the meet for their dedication to the program and accomplishments throughout their careers.
Earning a top swim for the Panthers from the women’s side was Crystal Zhang, who bested the next finisher by over one second in the 200 yard freestyle event, finishing in 2:02.16. Just missing a first place finish in the 50 yard freestyle was Jimenez, who clocked in .12 seconds behind Olivia Stebbins-Hopkins from Saint Rose, touching the wall in 26.67 seconds.
The women’s 400 yard freestyle relay, comprised of three seniors in Brown, Mattei and Jimenez and joined by Ashley Danulevith was victorious in the event, completing the race 2.60 seconds quicker than the Golden Knights quartet, clocking in at 3:55.07.
On the men’s side, the solo win came from rookie Andrew Nazareno, who came in eight seconds quicker than the next finisher in the 500 yard freestyle race, in a time of 5:21.19.
Nazareno was also a member of the freestyle relay that came away with the gold medal, joined by Asher Kocalis, Brian Klotsche, and Sean Roudnitsky. Their time of 3:29.73 was over 10 seconds quicker than the quartet from Saint Rose, who clocked in later at 3:41.40.
Kocalis and Jason Rosen were also both responsible for two silver medals apiece on the afternoon.
Adelphi swimming and diving will head to the College of Staten Island on Saturday, January 18 for a dual meet with the Dolphins.
