HOUSTON – Four new top-10 all-time finishes led the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program to a sixth consecutive victory at the Phill Hansel Invitational on Saturday at the CRWC Natatorium.

Houston closed out the 2022 Phill Hansel Invitational with 1812.5 points, sitting 395 points clear of second place Air Force at 1417.5 points. Rice ended the meet with the last podium spot with 1384 points while Tulane (882) followed in fourth, North Texas (800.5) grabbed fifth, and New Mexico (491.5) rounded out the remainder of the competition in sixth.

The group of Virag PeterAudrey McKinnonSophie Anderson and Alondra Ortiz all recorded new program top 10 times in their respective events.

The Cougars dominated in the 200-yard breaststroke as Peter picked up first place while simultaneously posting the third-fastest time in program history at 2:10.52. Henrietta Fangli took second place with a time of 2:13.50.

Audrey McKinnon followed in third place as she clocked in a time of 2:14.22 to propel her up from ninth to seventh on the all-time top 10 times list for the event. Sophie Anderson made her mark on the Houston all-time top 10-time list, posting a time of 2:15.01 to place her 10th overall on the list.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Alondra Ortiz finished in second place with a time of 1:58.17, moving her up from 10th to third all-time of the event’s list. Abby Jackson grabbed a third-place finish in the finals with a time of 2:00.45.

Emma Wright nearly beat her personal-best time in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 50.11 to finish second in the finals.

The Cougars continued to pick up additional points in the 50-yard free consolation final with Jenna Kerkman taking second with a time of 23.58 in the event.

Houston earned second place in the final relay of the meet as Wright, Anna ErvinAlyssa Bloser and Mary Catherine Jurica combined to post a time of 3:24.91 in the event.

On the platform, Hedda Grelz and Emilia Waters finished second and third respectively with scores of 243.95 and 241.35. Grelz, Waters, Josie Graves and Jolie Blodgett earned Zone Cuts following their performance on Saturday.

UP NEXT
With the conclusion of the Phill Hansel Invitational, Houston Swimming & Diving wraps up its fall schedule and will begin competition again in January.

The Cougars will face Miami and Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 13 in Coral Gables, Fla. From there, Houston will close out its regular season on Jan. 28 against Rice for its Senior Meet at the CRWC Natatorium.
