The 2025 Spring Speedo Sectionals in Boise concluded last night. The final session was highlighted by just three individual events: the 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle. The 400 medley relay also took place to cap off the competition.
In the girls’ 200 IM, Bellevue’s Alexa McDevitt picked up her sixth individual win of the meet, which completed a sweep of her individual events. Her final time of 1:58.65 clipped 0.04 off her previous lifetime best of 1:58.69, and won her the event by 1.05 seconds. She claimed victory in the 200 breast (2:12.68) on day one, then went on to win the 200 free (1:47.34), 400 IM (4:15.25), 500 free (4:46.60), and 100 breast (1:02.62) on Saturday and Sunday.
It was 1-2 sweep in the 200 IM for Bellevue, with Sophia Segerson, a Princeton commit, securing 2nd in 1:59.70, the only other swimmer under 2 minutes. Segerson’s career-best time in the 200 IM is 1:57.89.
After winning the 100 back on Friday, 16-year-old Bend swimmer Madelaine Thornton claimed the 50 free victory on Sunday. She hit the wall in 22.93, making her the only swimmer of the day to go sub-23. The Georgia commit had never broken the 23-second barrier prior to Sunday’s swim, with her previous personal best sitting at 23.25. Notably, Bellevue’s Sophia Sunwoo notched a prelim time of 22.50, but opted out of the final.
Thornton joined teammates Hadley Hayes (1:04.95 – breast), Emma Bronson (54.53 – fly), and Adeline Bennett (53.06 – free) on the 400 medley relay, where they struck gold in a time of 3:46.79. Thornton led her team off with a strong 54.25 back split, just shy of her individual winning time of 53.47 from Friday.
The 1650 free for the girls was claimed by 13-year-old Tessa Hurguy. The Bainbridge Island Swim Club swimmer finished the race in 17:22.78, setting a new career best by over three seconds. She placed 2nd in the 1000 free on day one, where she dropped seven seconds to finish in 10:20.26.
On the boys’ side, 17-year-old Aiden Hammer of the King Aquatic Club claimed the 1650 win, finishing with a time of 15:10.49, just under his previous personal record of 15:13.86. It was Hammer’s third win of the meet, having also won the 1000 free and 200 back earlier in the week.
Hammer originally committed to Cal in October, but switched his commitment to Texas last month. He also announced that he would be reclassifying to the graduating class of 2025, rather than 2026, and that he will be attending classes and competing in the fall.
Bend’s Campbell McKean won the 200 IM in 1:43.60, well shy of his personal best of 1:41.19 from December. Just yesterday, he dropped a time of 51.28 to win the 100 breast. The performance smashed his previous best of 51.72 and moved from him from 7th to 3rd in the 17-18 all-time rankings. He bumped Louisville freshman Jake Eccleston out of the top five and leapfrogged well-known names such as Kevin Cordes, Noah Nichols, and Max McHugh. The 51.28 ranks him 0.12 seconds behind Reece Whitley‘s national age group record (51.16).
18-year-old Mason Francis was the only swimmer to post a sub-20 performance in the boys’ 50. He sprinted to the wall in 19.68, winning by just over half a second. His best time coming into the event was 19.71, so he managed to set a slight personal best to end the meet. Earlier, he won the 100 free with a time of 43.71, narrowly missing his personal best of 43.55.
Francis is in the class of 2025 and is slated to compete at Ohio State in the fall.
In the final relay of the meet, Foothills’ quartet of Carter Bradley (51.80), Tobin Uhl (54.59), Duncan Salmen (48.25), and Bayden Todd (45.36) cruised to victory in the 400 medley relay (3:20.00).

Given the subpar state of US men’s breastroke currently, I would not at all be surprised if Bob turns Mckean into the guy for the 2028 Olympics. It’s still early tho, but his rapid improvement curve has been crazy and his ceiling is off the charts
I almost asked who is the best breastroker Bowman has coached, but the obvious answer is Marchand. McKean will be in good hands for sure.
I also think Bob’s better with breaststrokers that can do IM than just pure breaststrokers.
Texas up big time #HOOKEM
