Grand Canyon Sweeps WAC Women’s Athlete of the Week Awards

DENVER — Grand Canyon’s Hannah Kastigar and Bakersfield’s Carlee Burks have been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for January 6-12.

Kastigar, a freshman from Aberdeen, S.D. (Central HS), won all five individual events she competed in during two dual meet wins at North Dakota last weekend.  On Friday, Kastigar won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:27.01 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.49.  She also swam the leadoff leg of the victorious 400 free relay and posted a 100 free time of 53.18.  On Saturday, she won the 200 butterfly (2:02.07), 200 IM (2:05.43) and 200 backstroke (2:04.30) while also swimming on the winning 400 medley relay team.

Burks, a freshman from Bakersfield, Calif. (Centennial HS), won both diving events in a quad meet hosted by the Roadrunners on Saturday.  She posted a score of 256.46 on the 1-meter board and a mark of 251.55 on the 3-meter board.  Bakersfield defeated all three of the other teams at the meet.

Other swimmers nominated: Bakersfield sophomore Michaela Paige; and Seattle U freshman Blaise Wittenauer-Lee.

Other divers nominated: None.
