Futures Qualifier Trey Cunneen Sends Verbal To Mizzou (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Distance specialist Trey Cunneen has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Missouri, beginning in the fall of 2024.

Cunneen currently attends Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis, Missouri. He also trains year-round with the CSP Tideriders, which is also located in the St. Louis area. Currently, Mizzou only has two Missourians on their men’s roster and one on their women’s roster, with none coming in next fall.

“It is with great excitement I announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Missouri. Thank you to my family, friends, coaches and teachers who helped me reach this point. I am grateful for the opportunity to join this team and I look forward to working with Coach Grevers, Coach Sansoucie and the rest of the Mizzou coaching staff. Go Tigers! 🐯

Cunneen primarily swims freestyle, and has found success mainly in the longer freestyle races from the 200 on up. He owns Futures qualifying times in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle. He also competed at the 2022 Open Water Junior National Championship, where he placed 22nd in the 7.5k and 9th in the 5k.

Top SCY Times:

  • 200 free – 1:43:02
  • 500 free – 4:37.39
  • 1000 free – 9:26.75
  • 1650 free – 15:53.44

Cunneen competed at the Missouri High School Boys Class 1 State Championships in November, where he notched personal bests in the 200 and 500 free. His highest finish individually was 2nd in the 500, where he clocked a 4:37.39. He was also a member of his high school’s winning 4×100 freestyle relay this year, where he split a 48.05 as the second leg.

The Missouri men finished 7th out of 10 teams at the 2022 SEC Championships. It took a 4:20.76 to advance to finals in the 500, and a 15:21.00 to score in the 1650 at last year’s conference meet. Although Cunneen is currently outside of scoring range, if he continues to improve he could very well get there by the time he arrive on campus.

Mizzou’s distance squad was led last season by Jack Dubois, who clocked a 15:02.27 at the Mizzou Invite last year. Dubois is now graduated, leaving current sophomore Jibran Himsieh as the lead performer this season. Himsieh clocked a 15:28.03 at the Mizzou Invite this year, and will overlap with Cunneen for a year.

Cunneen joins Arkansas native Conner Boatright and Wisconsin native Anakin Fischer in Mizzou’s class of 2024. So far this a very distance-heavy class with all three of them being distance swimmers. Boatwright is currently the fastest of the group with best times of 15:21.22 in the 1650 and 4:27.00 in the 500 free. Fischer is between the two, holding best times of 15:42.33 and 4:32.85 in the 1650 and 500, respectively.
