Free/IM Specialist Ashley Bengtson (2020) Sends Verbal Commitment to Iowa State

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ashley Bengtson from Normal, Illinois has verbally committed to Iowa State University for 2020-21.

“I am thrilled to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Iowa State University! I cannot thank my family, friends, teammates, and Coach Yourd enough for helping me get to this point. I also want to thank the ISU coaching staff for making this an easy decision. Looking forward to being a part of the Cyclone family next year 💛🌪❤️

A senior at Normal Community High School, Bengtson specializes in freestyle and IM. As a sophomore she competed in the 100/200 free at the 2017 IHSA Girls’ State Championships and she contributed a leg (52.83) to the runner-up 400 free relay and the anchor leg (24.43) for the 3rd-place 200 medley relay. Bengtson does her year-round swimming with Waves Bloomington/Normal Y Swim Team. She lowered her lifetime bests in LCM 50/100/200/400 free, 200 back, and 200 IM this past long-course season. Most of those times came from Indy Sectionals in March, where she finaled in the 100 free and 200 free. She also competed at the Illinois Swimming LSC Senior Long Course Championships this summer and placed 6th in the 100 free, 12th, in the 200 free, and 15th in the 200 IM. In short-course season, she had a strong performance at Music City Invitational in Nashville last November. She was 9th in the 100 free, 4th in the 500 free, and 5th in the 200 IM and she took home new times in the 100/500 free, 200 back, 100 breast, and 200 IM.

SCY times:

  • 100 free – 52.51
  • 200 free – 1:53.79
  • 500 free – 5:04.08
  • 200 IM – 2:08.88
  • 200 back – 2:07.97

Although she had good times in the 1000 and the mile when she was younger, Bengtson has favored the mid-distance range during her high school years. Iowa State had 8 swimmers on the roster last year with sub-1:54 times in the 200 free and 3 with sub-5:04s in the 500. Only Lucia Rizzo will still be there when Bengtson arrives in Ames.
