Scott Goodrich, a former Arizona State assistant coach and Auburn alum, is joining head coach James Winchester’s staff at Texas Christian University along with University of Indianapolis assistant Mona Groteguth-Garcia, the school announced Friday.
Goodrich spent the last three years as the lead coach at Scottsdale Aquatic Club – South, where in 2016 his men’s team took first at Winter Juniors – West, and in 2018 took fourth (the women’s team was eighth both years). He began his coaching career as an assistant at ASU in 2009, primarily working with sprint athletes and coordinating recruiting efforts.
In 2013, he moved to Brazil to work with Cesar Cielo, the 2008 50 free Olympic champion and world record holder regarded as the greatest Brazilian swimmer in history. Goodrich oversaw his preparations for the FINA World Championships in Barcelona that year, where he won two titles, and then Cielo moved to Tempe later to train under Goodrich when he was with Sun Devil Aquatics. At the 2014 FINA Short Course World Championships in Doha, Cielo won gold in the 100 free and bronze in the 50 free.
Cielo swam with Goodrich at Auburn from 2005-2008, and again joined him in Arizona in 2016 when he was a coach with Mesa Aquatic Club – West. Goodrich himself was a four-time NCAA champion, seven-time SEC Champion and 10-time All-American while competing for the Tigers, and qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004 and 2008.
“His experience at the college level of Arizona State, the club level with a respected program at Scottsdale Aquatic Club, and with his experience coaching one of the fastest men alive (Cesar Cielo), is going to bring a ton to the table,” Winchester said. “His experience with sprinters is going to bring a distinct impact to our program and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Scott to our family.”
Groteguth-Garcia spent the last two years as an assistant at the University of Indianapolis. During her time there, the men’s team won two GLVC Conference Championship titles (2018, 2019) and logged two third place finishes at the NCAA DII Championships (2018, 2019). The women’s team placed second in the GLVC in 2018 and 2019.
She swam at the University of North Texas, graduating in 2015 with a degree in psychology, and was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 2008 and 2012. After graduating, she was an assistant coach at Lewis University, where she earned an M.A. in organizational leadership in 2017.
“She brings a championship experience from her time at the University of Indianapolis and has had a large amount of experience working with Division II NCAA All-Americans and champions,” Winchester, entering his second season at TCU, said. “As someone who has coached at the Division II level, there’s a lot of fast swimming that occurs, and Mona will bring great knowledge and experience from that level.”
“At TCU we are looking to provide world class academic and athletic opportunities and I believe that Mona and Scott will add to that,” Winchester added. “With the additions to our staff this summer, we’re really excited to see what we can do in year two, and look forward to representing TCU at a high level.”
Coach Winchester is putting together a great staff. Similar to above comment, TCU has everything going for it (but a facility.) If (or when) Winchester pulls it all off, TCU needs to deliver – otherwise they are going to lose their Head Coach to one of the big boys as well!
Good news. TCU has a lot of work to do to keep up with the improvements SMU is making. Now if they athletic administration would only take a few of the millions they are keeping and build a decent pool so these folks can have a pool to train in. No way a school of this caliber with the money they have should be training in a 6 lane 5 foot (at best) 25 yard pool. I hope the frogs get what they deserve!
