Fordham University Women Have Undefeated Season

The Fordham University Women’s swim team made history during the 2021-2022 season. The Lady Rams had a perfect 7-0 season, the first women’s squad to do this since the 2009-2010 season. The Lady Rams won the A-10 Conference Championship that year, as well.

They finished their 7-0 season with a win against St. Francis University Brooklyn on Wednesday February 2, 2022 with a score of 164-72.

Just before the meet, Fordham honored the senior swimmers with a senior recognition and celebration. There were a total of 15 seniors honored, including 8 women and 7 men.

Leading the way at the start of the meet was the winning 200 Medley Relay, including Leire Martin (27.30), Becky Kamau (29.70), Vicky Navarro (25.94), and Maddie Bergin (24.03).

In the freestyle events, freshman Emilie Krog took first place in both the 1000 free (10:26.95) and the 500 free (5:04.50). In the 200 free, junior Clare Culver came out on top in 1:54.48. Senior Vaula Vekkeli took first in the 100 free with a 53.73. And in the 50 free, freshman Maddie Bergin took the win with a 24.69.

Freshman Ainhoa Martin took the win in the 200 IM (2:03.88), followed by another win in the 100 fly (56.07). Freshman Leire Martin snagged a win in the 100 back with a time of 57.14, and senior Becky Kamau had a top time of 1:04.30.

The final relay was a fun one for the Lady Rams, with Vicky Navarro, Jess Zebrowski, Clare Culver, and Maddie Bergin taking a win in the 200 free relay.

On the diving side, senior Natalie Ortof won both the 1-meter (278.88) and 3-meter (250.73) diving events.

The Lady Rams are set to finish the season at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Geneva, Ohio on February 16-19, 2022.
