FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted first-place finishes on Saturday while the men’s squad collected the top spot in 12 races as the two programs opened the season with the Fairfield Invitational. The women’s team won the event with 508 points while the men’s team took the top spot with 686 points.

The Stags swept eight events with Fairfield winning the men’s and women’s race for the 800 free, the 200 free, the 100 back, the 50 free, the 200 breast, the 400 free, the 200 IM, and the 400 free relay. In addition to the success at the Invitational, Matthew Torres established four US Paralympic Records on Saturday, setting the mark for the 200 free (2:08.07), the 100 free (1:01.21), the 50 free (29.88 set in the first 50 meters of the 100 free), and the 400 free (4:26.67).

“I am so proud of this team,” Head Swimming and Diving Coach Jacy Dyer said. “Our divers started off the invitational with some personal best scores and really gained momentum moving into Saturday. The whole team did a great job of showing the work they have been putting into practices every day. The details are really coming along well and that’s a huge testament to their hard work.”

The 800 free started things the run of sweeps for the Stags as Erin Hoyland (9:35.18) and Joseph Stewart (8:35.54) garnered first place finishes. The 200 free saw Sydney Scalise (2:10.38) and Tim Regan (1:55.64) tapping the wall first. Erini Pappas won the 100 back with a time of 1:05.06 while her counterpart Oliver McLaughlin finished the distance in 58.34.

Olivia Thompson (27.13) and Alex Belfer (23.11) captured the top spot in the 50 free while Cailey Stockwell (2:43.73) and Jeffrey Vlass (2:25.54) secured first place nods in the 200 breast. Pappas picked up another first place swim in the 200 IM with her time of 2:23.90, while Ed Hunt collected a time of 2:07.42 to take the top slot in the event. Sydney Scalise garnered first place in the 400 free in 4:38.17 and Joseph Stewart (4:06.24) also earned the same result in the event.

Three men’s swimmers also picked up victories in their respective events beginning with Hans Lim and Chris Ford tying for the top spot in the 100 breast in 1:05.27. Ed Hunt pulled in a first-place swim in the 200 fly, finishing the distance in 2:06.92. And, Alex Belfer recorded the top spot in the 100 free (51.97).

On Friday night, Sam Tonole was the 1 meter dive leader with 223.05 points and Noah Duncan took first place in the 3 meter dive with 252.75 points.  For the women, Lia Oppenheim was the top finisher in the 1 meter with 201.55 points for fifth place and in the 3 meter with 223.35 points for second place.

“This was a phenomenal weekend for our divers,” Head Diving Coach Devon O’Nalty said. “From divers achieving personal best scores to some performing brand new dives for the first time ever, this meet gives me a great deal of excitement for what’s ahead because I know this is just the beginning of the season.”

Fairfield will return to the RecPlex pool on Saturday, October 15 when both the men’s and women’s programs host Monmouth University for a dual meet. The event starts at noon.
