Eight Provincial Records Broken at Canada Games Trials

This past weekend at the Michelle Moore/Canada Games Trials competition in Regina, Saskatchewan Maya Lehnert-ThielJacob Korpan and Noah Choboter re-wrote a good portion of the Swim Saskatchewan record books.

The three swimmers combined to break eight provincial records.

Maya Lehnert-Thiel, a 14 year old from the Saskatoon Goldfins Swim Club was the most impressive of the three athletes. Lehnert-Thiel broke 13-14 age group records in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

She lowered the 50 breaststroke both in the preliminaries and the finals eventually setting the record at a 34.77.

In the 100 breaststroke Lehnert-Thiel lowered the age group record by almost two seconds to a 1:14.47. The previous record had been set by Rhiannon Leier who was a six-time NCAA All-American honoree while attending the University Miami, a World Championships finalist and a two time Olympian (2000 and 2004).

In the 200 breaststroke Lehner-Thiel set records not only in the 13-14 age group but also set a senior/open provincial record swimming a time of 2:37.01.

14 year old Jacob Korpan of the Regina Optimist Dolphins broke the 13-14 age group records in both the 50 and 100 backstroke events. Korpan swam a time of 28.52 in the 50 and a 1:00.48 in the 100, breaking the record set by Riley Janes in 1992. Janes eventually went on to earn 11 All-American honors while competing for Texas A & M and competed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Noah Choboter, a 17 year old who swims for the Regina Optimist Dolphins, broke the 15-17 male 50 butterfly record with a time of 25.58.
