Many National Federations have been very concerned about safety at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India. Most of these concerns, however, have been centered around the safety of the city, including concerns about terrorist threats. The Australian team had even considered flying swimmers in for their events from the team base-camp in Kuala Lumpur.
Yesterday, at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex, a whole different safety concern was on display, as a diver from West Bengal was injured during a test event for the lead-up to the real-deal.
Priyanka Banejee injured her leg in several places when she stepped through a drain cover that had come lose.
In addition to the unsecure drain covers, there were concerns over the lack of railings on the diving platforms, and a cave-in of the temporary roof on the facility during a previous event. Thankfully, nobody was in the facility when the roof collapsed, but the lack of attention to safety details in the construction of the facility should certainly be a concern, both for athletes and spectators.
