Distance Freestyler Claire McGinnis Commits to University of Miami

Claire McGinnis of the Oakland Live Y’ers and Rochester Adams High School has verbally committed to swim for the University of Miami fror the 2016-2017 season.

McGinnis, a distance swimmer, swims under head coach Jeff Cooper of the Oakland Live Y’ers. Here are her best times:

  • 200 FR: 1:54.97
  • 500 FR: 5:02.23
  • 1000 FR: 10:13.72
  • 1650 FR: 17:08.95
  • 400 IM: 4:32.59

The University of Miami women, under the leadership of coach Andy Kershaw, finished ninth of thirteen teams at last year’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. While McGinnis doesn’t quite have fast enough times to hit the ‘A’ relays (last year’s 800 free relay members all split under 1:50), she would have scored five points for the Hurricanes last year by taking twentieth in the mile.

The Miami women started off this season by taking fifth at the Floria Invitational in September. Since then, they have won a dual against Florida Atlantic University and lost duals against Rice and Florida International University. McGinnis will have a chance to step right into a gap when senior distance swimmer Alejandra Gonzalez graduates at the end of this season.

“I chose Miami because I fell in love with the school overall,” McGinnis said. “I loved the campus and how diverse the student body is, as well as the team. I automatically felt at home and welcomed by the girls on the team.”
