DENVER, Colo. – Oredigger freshmen flexed their muscle, and speed, on Friday as the Colorado School of Mines Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams competed at the University of Denver.

On DU’s Senior Day, the Orediggers fell in both duals to their NCAA Division I hosts. The final score on the men’s side was 164-31 while the women went 169-34. Even so, Mines had numerous bright spots across multiple events. While upperclassmen had their moments, an Oredigger youth moment stole the day.

Action began with Mines’ women taking fourth in the 200-medley relay while the Oredigger men grabbed silver. Next was the 1000-free featuring Isabella Bono’s fourth-place finish with true freshman Vladislav Kazakin taking silver for the men. Kazakin churned out a time of 9:36.42 to claim the first individual “medal” of the day. The 200-free followed Kazakin’s highlight and resulted in Maggie Wells in fourth for the women and another true freshman, Brenden Cook, taking fifth for the men in 1:43.32.

The Orediggers found more outstanding performances in the springs. True freshman Jennifer Pierson was second thanks to a season-best 23.80 in the 50-free. Upperclassman Jordan Tierney also had a season-best in the same race after clocking 24.39. The men’s side saw freshman Sawyer Jones go 20.86. Those results brought Friday’s dual to the halfway point with the 400-IM where Isabella Bono and Ronan Lauinger were Mines’ top finishers.

As the dual entered the back half of racing, Savannah Karas and Jaron O’Grady led the Orediggers in the 200-fly. The 100-free was next and saw another top-three finish from Jennifer Pierson while Sawyer Jones once again led Mines on the men’s side. The top Oredigger finishers in the 200-back were Emi Jedryka and Kazakin. Then, in the 500-free, it was Wells and Lauinger with Lauinger racing to silver. The 200-breast was all Jordan Tierney and Lauinger. That brought the final races of the day in the 400-freestyle relay. Pierson and Abby Swanson made the women’s quartet half freshmen as Mines took third. Cook and Kazakin did the same for the men with the Orediggers claiming bronze in that race as well.

Next weekend, Mines heads to Air Force where the men will go head-to-head with the Falcons while the women’s side features Northern Colorado in a tri-meet.
