Women’s Recap
NAU extended its lead over the competition during day 3 of the WAC Championships, now sitting atop the team rankings with a margin of over 100 points.
The Rebels picked up the first victory of the day thanks to Elsa Musselman, who blasted into the wall in 53.45 to claim the championship title. CBU’s Sofia Maksimova and GCU’s Paula Martinez did their best to chase Musselman down, posting times of 53.63 and 53.73, respectively.
Idaho’s Ginger Kiefer completed a sweep of the IM events by winning the 400 IM in 4:13.43. Her performance marked a lifetime best, as she dropped four seconds from her time and raced into the wall over five seconds ahead of runner-up Fruzsin Macsok (4:18.53).
GCU swept the medal spots of the 100 breast. Freshman Beth Young led the way, earning her first conference championship title in a lifetime best 1:00.76. She was followed by teammates Raphaela Nakashima (1:01.07) and Maria Brunlehner (1:01.56).
Nakashima and Brunlehner were back in action for the 400 medley relay, where they were joined by Marta Guasp and Martinez to bring home another victory for the Antelopes. They posted a time of 3:38.50, racing into the wall over two seconds ahead of runner-up Northern Colorado.
NMSU, who trails NAU in the overall team rankings, picked up its two wins during the night. Katie Rink turned in a lifetime best performance of 1:48.40 in the 200 free, shaving .37 off of her previous time, while Emily Dobbins prevailed in the 100 back in 54.69.
Men’s Recap
Two conference records fell on the men’s side of competition as defending champion UNLV overtook Cal Baptist to gain the lead by just four points.
Rebel Daniel Nicusan broke the all-time WAC conference record in the 100 breast, throwing down a 51.58 to shave .31 off of the previous record which was set by Michael Barnosky in 2016. Teammate and former two-time defending champion Danny Beji secured the runner-up spot in 52.43, just .02 ahead of 3rd-place Jonathan Reiter.
CBU added another conference record to its repertoire in the 400 medley relay. The team of Remi Fabiani, Reiter, Tyler Mansheim and Andrija Petkovic threw down a time of 3:06.35, lowering the standard by .39 from the previous record of 3:06.74, set by GCU in 2019.
The 400 IM saw Air Force collect its first win of the meet, with Camden Swigart posting a 3:46.01 to knock 2.5 seconds off of his best time and pick up his second title in the event in the past three years.
CBU’s Fabiani, who broke the conference record in the 50 free on night two, brought home his second individual victory of the meet in the 100 back. He threw down a time of 45.40 to dethrone defending champion Alex Volkov, who snagged the runner-up spot in 45.98.
