After winning its scrimmage against Maine last weekend, the Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving team officially opened the 2017-18 season on Saturday with a 192-108 victory over Boston College at Karl Michael Pool.
The Big Green took the top three spots in four events, while seven athletes won 12 individual events, being led by Connor LaMastra and his three individual wins.. Justin Sodokoff and AJ Krok both qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championship on the 3-meter diving board, while Sodokoff also met the standard on 1-meter.
Dartmouth got off to a good start in the first event, the 3-meter diving, as first through third went to the Big Green. Sodokoff was first (344.03) and was followed by Krok (327.30) and Ray Neistat (307.88). Later on in the afternoon, the three Dartmouth divers finished in the same order on the 1-meter board: Sodokoff was first (313.95), Krok was second (291.44) and Neistat took third (277.26)
The Big Green were first and fourth in the 200-yard medley relay, with the A relay finishing with a 1:35.82 and the B relay following with a time of 1:37.77. Josh Hendell won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:54.61), leaving over three seconds between him and Zander Santana in second, while Tony Shen was first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.95), being followed by Stas Van Genderen less than two seconds later in third (1:44.57).
Delaney Hall won both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.86) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.13). LaMastra won the 200-yard fly (1:49.21), finishing over five seconds ahead of Taylor Cortens in second. He was back a few events later, winning both the 100-yard fly (50.48) and 200-yard IM (1:53.19).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Brandon Liao and Henry Patrick touched less than two-tenths of a second apart. Liao was first (21.48), while Patrick followed directly after (21.66). They were back in the 100-yard freestyle, taking first (47.88) and third (48.56), respectively. Shen finished in second place (47.92).
Dartmouth took the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle, being led by Van Genderen (4:44.31). Hendell took second (4:46.66) and Bruno Korbar placed third (4:47.17). To end the day, the Big Green’s 400-yard freestyle relay finished in first place (3:09.51). Made up of Liao, Patrick, LaMastra and Shen, Dartmouth touched over a second ahead of BC.
Next Saturday, the Big Green will travel to Cambridge to take on Harvard and Cornell.
