Dane County YMCA’s Elizabeth Nelson Breaks 100 Fly NAG Record

Another day, another record: thus is the way of a swimming championship season. In this morning’s prelims of the 100 yard fly at the NCSA Junior Nationals, Elizabeth Nelson of the Dane County YMCA broke the 13-14 National Age Group Record with a 53.36.

That busts up a tie between a pair of collegiate stars: Stanford’s All-American Felicia Lee (2006) and USC’s Kendyl Stewart (2009) had matching 53.44’s in the race from their age group days.

Nelson, who has been hovering in A-finals for the whole meet, is the second seed headed into the evening session; behind only NCAP’s Janet Hu (53.18). Hu currently holds the 15-16 record.

There is plenty of competition in this race; Georgia HS State Champion Nicole Stafford is 3rd in 53.61, and just to Nelson’s left will be Olympian Lia Neal (53.88).

Nelson now is only the second current National Age Group Record holder from the state of Wisconsin; Mitch Stoehr has held the 10 & under 200 yard free record since 2003.
