Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), who swam in all nine individual events for Goucher this afternoon, finished as the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle and placed third in both the 400-yard individual medley and 1000 free, helping the Gophers gain a 52-36 victory over Drew.
There was a third Landmark Conference school involved in the meet: the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy defeated head coach Thomas Till’s Gophers, 51-37. The Mariners (4-3, 3-0 Landmark) also came out on top of the Rangers (0-9, 0-5 Landmark), 55-33.
Richter, an exhibition swimmer in six of the nine events, placed second behind Merchant Marine’s Case Kuikhoven in the 500 free. Kuikhoven’s winning time was 5:13.99, while Richter was clocked at 5:33.54.
Richter completed the 400 IM in 4:42.76 and the 1000 free in 11:05.04.
Goucher swimmers took first place in two events: Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) touched first in the 100 butterfly (:53.19) and Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) did likewise for the Gophers (3-5, 1-4 Landmark) in the 100 free (:50.43).
Morgan Richter took second place ahead of his twin brother in the 400 IM with his time of 4:39.25. Davis was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:55.27) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) completed the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.83, good for second place.
In addition to the two by Colin Richter, there were three other third-place performances by Goucher swimmers: Grant Gerber (Portland, Maine/Casco Bay) in the 50 free (:24.74), Ben Shriner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) in the 100 butterly (1:04.11) and Patrick Tribbett (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman) in the 100 backstroke (1:07.23).
Goucher’s entry of Davis, Joey Hughes (Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan Catholic), Gerber and Morgan Richter took second place in the 200 free relay, the meet’s final event. The foursome recorded a time of 1:36.81.
Prior to the meet, Patrick McNeel (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) and Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), the two seniors on Goucher’s 2013-14 roster, were recognized on the occasion of the final home meet of their careers.
