BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Vikings won their second straight dual meet by a score of 132-104 on Thursday afternoon at Canisius. The Green and White will have a quick turnaround as they swim at Niagara tomorrow at 11 a.m.
“All-around good stuff from the team today,” said head coach Hannah Burandt. “Some of our swimmers are starting to find their front-end speed, while others are finding that their bodies are down. However, those struggling aren’t losing their techniques in their races. These are exciting things to see as we approach championship season.”
Burandt continued, “The team was trailing 48-44 when we gathered in a huddle to discuss how we could strengthen our lineup for the remaining events. Maddie stepped up and said she would swim the 500 freestyle while Val and Olivia would take part in the 200 breaststroke.”
Cleveland State claimed the first individual race of the day as Madison Taker was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 11:00.71.
Grace Chelf touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.93 and Valentina Rengifo followed with a win in the 400-yard IM after clocking a 4:45.81.
In the 200-yard butterfly, the Green and White claimed the top three spots with Taker winning her second event of the day, finishing in 2:11.88.
Rachel Contich was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle after putting up a time of 54.71.
Chelf took home her second win of the day in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 2:09.83.
For the second time on the day, the Green and White went 1-2-3 in an event as Olivia Leonard won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.18.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Grace Butcher touched the wall first with a time of 2:27.77.
Brooke Eichel won both diving events on the afternoon, scoring 226.50 in 1m and 232.13 in 3m.

Cleveland State opened the meet strong as the 400-medley relay team of Kenny Thomas, Griffin Manning, Thomas Lundin, and Josh Merchbaker won with a time of 3:25.27.
Nathen Eberhardt claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:42.74.
In the 400-yard IM, Jackson Nester won the race after putting up a time of 4:06.06 and followed that up with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.95.
Thomas sprinted to a win in the 100-yard freestyle with a 47.76 and in the 500-yard freestyle, Spencer Tussing won with a time of 4:41.43.
The Vikings went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke, led by Tyler Schultze first place finish with a time of 2:06.96.
Cleveland State capped off the day with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the group of Connor Green, Jake Taulbee, Tussing, and Lundin put up a time of 1:26.61.

The women’s team earned first place in both relays as the Canisius men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the new year with a dual meet against Cleveland State Thursday afternoon in collegiate swimming in diving action at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.
The Vikings defeated the Golden Griffins on both sides, grabbing a 131.5-73.5 win for the men’s squad and a 132-104 victory for the women.
Sophomore Archie Minto paced the men’s team, earning first place finishes in the 50 free and 200 fly. Minto touched the wall in 21.14 in the 50 and 1:50.57 in the fly events.
Graduate student Liam O’Connell garnered a top spot in the 1000 free, swimming a 9:46.93. O’Connell also earned second place in the 200 (1:42.90) and 500 free (4:42.44) events, respectively.
The relays led the women’s side as the Griffs earned victories in the 200 free and 400 medley relays.
In the 200 free, freshmen Hannah Brainard, Emily Blake and Mandy Hill, along with junior Jordan O’Connor swam a meet-best 1:41.22 for the top spot.
The quartet of O’Connor, freshman Lana Janson, senior Grace Van Buren and sophomore Ashley Allaire swam a 4:01.54 in the medley relay.
Van Buren earned a pair of second place finishes in the 50 (24.95) and 100 (54.73) free events, finishing a hundredth of a second behind the first-place finisher in both events.

• Canisius will return to action on Saturday for a dual meet at John Carroll. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from the Johnson Natatorium in University Heights, Ohio.
