Chattahoochee Gold’s Grant Davis Verbally Commits to Auburn (2021)

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Grant Davis of the Chattahoochee Gold Swim Club and Sequoyah High School in Georgia has verbally committed to Auburn as part of the high school class of 2021. While his commitment is across a state line, the drive from his home in the north Atlanta suburbs is only about a two-and-a-half hour drive to Auburn.

“I’m very proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Auburn University! I’d like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for all of their support throughout my journey. I am excited to see what the future holds!”

Davis had a pair of top 5 finishes at the Georgia 6-7A (big schools) High School State Championship meet last year as a sophomore. He placed 4th in the 500 free in 4:36.26 and 5th in the 200 free in 1:43.10. As his team’s only scorer, he led Sequoyah to a 36th-place team finish at the meet.

That meet, in February, didn’t seem to get Davis’ full attention, however. He peaked a month later at the NCSA Junior National Championships, where he was 6+ seconds better in the 500 and 1+ seconds better in the 200 free. His time at NCSA’s in the 500 would have won the Georgia state title if he’d done it at that meet.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 22.66
  • 100 free – 48.79
  • 200 free – 1:41.90
  • 500 free – 4:29.77
  • 1000 free – 9:19.38
  • 1650 free – 15:41.54
  • 100 back – 54.97
  • 200 back – 1:55.26
  • 100 fly – 53.38
  • 200 fly – 1:55.19

Auburn head coach Gary Taylor built his reputation on training middle distance and distance swimmers while an assistant at NC State. That same identity hasn’t fully taken root at Auburn yet, though there are signs: the men’s team’s 48 points scored in the 1650 free at last year’s SEC Championship meet, which was their 2nd-most among individual swimming events (behind 70 in the 100 fly). It looks like Davis will lean toward the mile as his 3rd NCAA event, though his 200 and 500 frees are by-far his best races (among D1 championship events).
