RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University hosted its fifth home event of the season, welcoming NCAA Division III powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to the Lancer Aquatics Center on a beautiful Friday afternoon. Today’s distance meet saw CBU sweep CMS, as the Lancer women defeated the Athenas 147.5-95.5 while the Lancer men claimed victory over the Stags, 144-94.
The meet was originally intended to include Incarnate Word, but national travel issues prevented the Cardinals from attending. The distance meet featured races unique to the format such as the 500-yard medley relay and the 300 individual medley.
SWIM
Between the lanes, CBU swimmers claimed 12 individual wins, three races that featured an all Lancer podium, and claimed three of the four relays contested on the day. The Lancer men won both the 500 medley relay and the 500 freestyle relay in times of four minutes and 41.85 seconds and 4:08.73, respectively. The women claimed their relay win in the 500 free relay in a time of 4:48.15.
The women spread six race wins amongst six different swimmers. Freshmen Giulia Decataldo and Amber Harris continued strong starts to their collegiate careers, each claiming a win on Friday. Decataldo won the 1,000 free as the only competitor in her race to finish with a sub-11 minute time at 10:50.32, while Harris took the top spot in the 300 butterfly in 3:17.29, nearly 12 seconds clear of the field.
Patricia Van Law dominated her 300 backstroke event, finishing over seven seconds ahead of second place in a time of 3:16.76. Rebeca Oviedo won the closest finish of the day, taking the 500 free title in 5:11.53, out touching a tie for second place by .02 seconds.
The women completed two of the Lancers’ three event sweeps on the day as Mia Maspers (24.63), Hannah Houlton (25.62), and Isabella Rhodes (25.73) all placed in the 50 free, while Faith Brazil (54.57), Maspers (54.63) and Lauren McKenna (55.82) took full control of the 100 free.
The men had two swimmers double-up on wins on Friday as Robert Moseley took gold in the 300 IM (3:00.31) and the 300 back (2:58.92), and Remi Fabiani took wins in the 200 free (1:41.47) and the 100 free (46.20). CBU finished one-two-three in that 100 free race with Jacob Leahy (46.90) and Estevao Hornos (47.22) right behind Fabiani.
Leahy would collect a first-place finish in the 50 free, touching the wall in just 20.77 seconds. Scott Tolman found success in the 300 breaststroke event, winning in a time of 3:21.47.
DIVING
On the boards, the CBU men were represented solely by Jacob Penman who came through in a big way for the Lancers. Penman won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events on Friday, beating out five Stags for the honors. Penman secured his highest scores as a Lancer in both events, finishing with 278.78 on the 1-meter and 277.43 on the 3-meter.
The women’s side saw a Lancer claim gold on both boards as well with Madison Liu claiming victory on the 1-meter board, recording a career-best score of 258.68. Paula De Moya Alvarez completed the Lancer diving sweep on Friday, winning the 3-meter event with a score of 257.93.
UP NEXT
Swim and dive will be back in action in just a week as both teams head west, but with separate intended destinations. The Lancer dive squads will partake in arguably the most competitive meet of the regular season as they travel to Westwood to take part in the three-day Bruin Diving Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center hosted by UCLA from Jan. 14-16. The swimmers will make their way to UC Santa Barbara for the first time in program history to challenge the Gauchos head-to-head at the Campus Pool on Jan. 15.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team returned to action after a one-month layoff against Division I California Baptist University in CBU’s annual distance meet and fell by a final score of 147.5-95.5.
With the defeat, CMS, ranked No. 10 in Division III, now stands at 3-3 on the season, with two losses to Division I programs (UC San Diego, California Baptist) and a close dual defeat to No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer in its last competition on Dec. 3-4. The CBU Distance meet features several events of longer distances than standard dual comeptition, including 300-yard races in the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, and 500-yard medley and freestyle relays.
The Athenas had some strong performances in the meet, including the 300-yard breaststroke, where Augusta Lewis and Kelly Prawira finished 1-2, with Lewis winning a time of 3:40.55 and Prawira coming in second in 3:44.11. Lewis also took first place in the 300-yard IM with a time of 3:17.26, winning by just over two seconds over Patricia Van Law of CBU, while Allyson Yao was third, Lexi Lee was fourth, Prawira was fifth and Riley Green was sixth.
Ella Blake earned another individual win for the Athenas by taking first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.57, winning by just a tenth of a second over Rebecca Oviedo of California Baptist. She also finished in a tie for second in a remarkably close race in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:11.55 to tie Giulia Decataldo of the Lancers, just .02 behind Oviedo, who won in 5:11.53 as the top three finishers were all within two-hundredths of a second of each other in a distance race.
CMS opened the meet with a win in the 500-yard medley relay, with Jameson Mitchum, Prawira, Lewis, and Emily Warner finishing in 5:16.11 to win by just over two seconds. Mitchum added a second-place finish in the 300-yard backstroke, Gracey Hiebert was second in the 1000 in 11:00.59, while the 500-yard freestyle relay team of Ava Sealander, Anna Werts, Lexi Lee and Blake came in a close second as well.
The Athenas will be back in action next weekend for their final home meet of the 2021-22 season when they entertain Redlands at 10 a.m. at Axelrood Pool. Tomorrow’s scheduled SCIAC meet at Whittier was canceled due to health and safety protocols at Whittier.

Lang gave an impressive showing for the Stags, sweeping the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle races to provide 18 points towards the CMS total. He took the 1000 in the first individual race of the day by almost 15 seconds over Hunter Harbauer of CBU, finishing in 9:47.65 to Harbauer’s 10:02.24, and then added a much closer win in the 500 by edging Brandon Schuster by less than a half-second, 4:39.64 to 4:40.04.
The Stags were also strong in the 300-yard butterfly, earning a 1-2-3 finish, with Frank Applebaum taking first place in 3:04.46. Ben Smith came in second for the Stags, while Thayer Breazeale was the third-place finisher. Applebaum was also second in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:45.20. Grant Stucky had three top-three finishes, coming in second in the 300 breast in 3:27.63, third in the 300 IM in 3:03.99, and third in the 300 back in 3:04.40, while Cyrus Gaylord and Jack Griffith were 2-3 in both diving events.
The Stags capped off the meet with the second and third finishers in the 500-yard freestyle relay, with Jeremy Kim, Marco Conati, Theo Johnson and Applebaum coming in second in 4:10.64, while Nathan Luis, Dylan Krueger, Thayer Breazeale and Lang were third in 4:14.44.
