SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Bryant men’s swimming and diving team defeated Providence, 196-104, to open the 2021-22 season.
Coach Bourassa’s Comments: “We had great momentum after our wins in the medley relay and 1000 free, and the team fed off the energy for each race that followed. We had big wins in the distance events from Leo Luna and the 200 fly with Andrew Gamper, and had 1-2 finishes in both backstroke and both breaststroke events. Overall, our men started the season with some strong swims from our returners and some standout swims from our freshmen.”

Bryant started the match with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Matthew Mays, FuKang Wong, Dom Scifo, and Reese Stevenson finished with a time of 1:33.83.

Two freshmen gave the Bulldogs a 1-2 finish in 1000 yard freestyle. Leonardo Luna took the top spot with a time of 9:54.4, while Griffin Schimmel came home second.

Another freshman, Alex Rowson, came first in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.86.

Bryant picked up another 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, as Mays took first (51.46) and Griffin Lajoie came second.

The Bulldogs again swept the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke, with FuKang Wong (56.55) and Calvin Groenewold pacing the field.

Freshman Andrew Gamper picked up the win in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.56.

Conner Lofstrom came home second in the 50 free with a time of 21.55.

Bryant took second and third in the 100 free with Alex Rowson and Eric Bebel.

Matthew Mays picked up another win and led another Bulldogs 1-2 in the 200 back. He finished with a time of 1:53.63, ahead of Griffin Lajoie in second.

Fu Kang Wong also won again in the 200 breast, with a time of 2:08.74. Calvin Groenewold came second for Bryant’s fifth 1-2 finish of the meet.

Leo Luna picked up his second win of the night in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.20.

Dom Scifo and Eric Bebel came second and third in the 100 fly for the Bulldogs.

FuKang Wong won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.0, his fourth victory of the meet.

Bryant came second and third in the 200 freestyle relay, with the team of Reese Stevenson, Eric Bebel, Dom Scifo, and Matthew Mays clocking in at 1:27.61.

Divers Evan Clark (221.47) and Ben Prouty (226.05) led the way for the Bulldogs on Thursday night in Providence.

Coach Cameron’s Comments: “It was a good start for the women. Our divers did a great job getting the meet started last night with great performances by all. We swam well today, it was a good indicator of where we are at and what we need to work on. We need to be tough and get back at it tomorrow.”

The Bulldogs opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 meter medley relay. The winning team of Mackenzie Patch, Julia Stenhard, Alyvia Beaudion, and Laurel Carey finished with a time of 2:01.07.

Natalia Kuipers finished second in the 800 meter freestyle with a time of 9:39.15.

Erin Doruska picked up the first individual win for Bryant in the 200 free with a time of 2:09.10.

Freshman Reagan Lord won her first race in the 100 back, clocking in at 1:04.79. Julia Stenhard came second for another Bulldog 1-2.

Sophia Grabman was Bryant’s top finisher in the 100 breast with a time of 1:19.63.

Charlee LeGallais came second in the 200 fly for the Bulldogs with a time of 2:30.76.

Erin Doruska picked up another win in the 50 free with a time of 27.38.

Doruska won again in the 100 free (59.55), with Alyvia Beaudion coming in second for the Bulldogs.

Reagan Lord notched her second win of the meet in the 200 back, reaching the wall at 2:18.59.

Freshman Sophia Grabman picked up her first win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:48.59.

Charlee LeGallais and Natalia Kuipers came second and third for Bryant in the 400 free.

Julia Stenhard (1:04.72) and Sara Gendron led the pack in the 100 fly, picking up another 1-2 for Bryant.

Reagan Lord notched her third win of the meet in the 200 individual medley, finishing at 2:23.44.

The Bulldogs rounded out the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay. Alyvia Beaudion, Erin Doruska, Julia Stenhard, and Charlee LeGallais finished with a time of 1:50.63.

Sydney Barnett (206.32) and Kyri Chambo (225.75) each picked up wins in the one meter dive events.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Providence College men’s swimming and diving program fell to intrastate rival Bryant, 196-104, on Oct. 22 in Smithfield, R.I.
In the 50-yard freestyle, three Friars finished in the top five to collect a combined total of 12 points in the event. Providence was paced by Will Layden, who finished with a time of 20.96, while teammate Brian Cantin finished third (21.93) and Aidan Hughes placed fifth (22.42).
Layden also claimed the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 47.00, which was over a full second faster than the second-place finisher for Bryant (48.27).
Justin Viotto took home top honors in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 4:52.40. Seth Brodnick finished third in the event (4:53.81). Viotto also placed second in the field during the 200-yard IM, with a time of 1:58.83.
Ryan Sharp earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (53.25), touching the wall ahead of three Bulldogs.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Aidan Hughes, Cantin, McGovern Brown and Layden grabbed 11 points for the Friars while finishing in 1:25.95.
In the 200-yard medley relay, McGovern, Kevin Hood, Sharp and Layden placed second to earn four points, touching the wall in 1:35.32.
Providence will return to action on Friday, Oct. 29 against Iona College. The meet will take place in New Rochelle, N.Y.
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Providence College women’s swimming and diving team fell to Bryant in dual-meet action, 178-122, at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. Five different Friars placed first in their respective events.
Sami Martin paced the competition in the 800-meter free style by more than seven seconds, touching the wall in 9:31.45. The second-place finisher from Bryant completed the event in 9:39.15.
The Friars swept the top-three spots in the 100-meter breaststroke and were led by Kathryn Presley’s time of 1:18.28. Julia McCarthy (1:18.93) and Hannah Weber (1:19.06) took home second and third place, respectively.
Elisia Pagliuca was the top finisher in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:29.50.
Grace Erickson joined the list of individual winners, as she cruised to a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle. She completed the event in 4:36.67, which was over two-seconds clear of her next competitor.
Liliana Dimmig led the field in the 100-yard butterfly in the meet, taking first with a time of 1:07.56.
