Brazil Announces Full Roster of 26 Swimmers for 2014 World Short Course Championships

When Brazil announced its 26-swimmer roster for the 2014 World Short Course Championships on Tuesday, it wasn’t even a swimmer that was garnering most of the domestic conversation.

Rather, it was the coaching staff, which featured Scott Goodrich among the 12 being sent that raised the most eyebrows.

Recently, Brazil’s superstar Cesar Cielo announced that he would return to training with Goodrich in Arizona after a season spent back at home in Brazil under the guidance of Australian Scott Volkers. The quick shift in staff resulting from Cielo’s recent move shows just how much influence he has in Brazilian swimming.

Other highlights of the roster is that Brazil will be without two of their top sprinters: Matheus Santana and Marcelo Chierighini. Chierighini struggled mightly in the last year, but Santana has bloomed into a star for Brazil, and so this means that we still won’t get to see the potential Brazilian Olympic medal-winning relay all together at the same meet.

Brazil won just two medals at the 2012 World Short Course Championships: Nicholas Santos took gold in the 50 fly and Guilherme Guido took bronze in the 100 back. They were much better in the last non-Olympic-year version of this meet, though, where they won 8 medals in 2010.
