Day 4 of the 2021 Brazilian Olympic Trials witnessed a new Brazilian National Record and added 4 new names to Brazil’s Olympic roster.
Only a week after her 21st birthday, Beatriz Pimentel Dizotti crushed the previous Brazilian National Record in the 1500 free by .41 to claim her spot on the Olympic roster with a time of 16:22.07. She is the first woman to qualify for Brazil’s 2021 Olympic roster at this meet in an individual, pool event.
It’s important to note that the previous Brazilian National record holder, Viviane Jungblut, was unable to compete at this meet after she tested positive for coronavirus. She will race the event at a Time Trial on June 12 in an attempt to qualify.
Second-place finisher Ana Marcela Cunha, who has qualified for the 10K Open Water race, also cracked the Olympic Qualifying standard, by about 7 seconds, but she said told reporters tonight that she will not swim the event in Tokyo. This means that third-place finisher Betina Lorscheitter who was 4 seconds under the Qualifying cut is tentatively added to Brazil’s Olympic roster, pending the results of Jungblut’s Time Trial.
There were two qualifiers in the men’s 100 freestyle: 20-year-old Andre Luiz Souza (48.15) and 23-year-old Pedro Spajari (48.31). Both swimmers beat the Olympic qualifying standard of 48.57 substantially.
Souza’s performance tonight ranks him 9th in the world this season while Spajari’s time ranks him 15th:

Breno Correia and Marcelo Chierighini took 3rd (48.74) and 4th (48.83), respectively, and will likely be offered spots to compete on the 4×100 freestyle relay. Brazil took 5th place in this event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, a relay that Chierighini competed on.
