Ian Rainey
Originally from Westport, Conn., Ian Rainey is a swimmer at the University of Michigan and competed as a member of USA Swimming’s National Junior Team. Currently a freshman Wolverine, Rainey is studying in the School of Literature, Science and the Arts, and he graduated high school from Staples. Rainey chose to focus on club swimming, and did not compete for his high school team. Rainey is primarily a distance swimmer, and trained with the Wilton YMCA Yahoo’s, which is a Gold Medal Club, but he is a strong 400 IMer and 200-stroke swimmer as well. He actually was the 2013 YMCA National Long Course champion in the 1500m freestyle, where he just missed the meet record by a few seconds. Rainey, whose middle name is Best, was born Dec. 16, 1995 and he has five siblings.
Michigan
2014-2015
As a freshman Rainey swam the 1,650 and 500 freestyle, as well as the 400 IM at the Big Ten Championships. He finished seventh in the mile, 11th in the 400 IM and 25th in the 500 freestyle. He made his collegiate debut against Iowa, where he won the 1,000 freestyle.
National Competition
At the 2013 long course Summer Junior Nationals Rainey broke Connecticut Swimming records in the 17-18 800m freestyle record and the 400m IM. In the 2013-2014 season, Rianey made it among the top 10 in his age group for multiple events – he finished eighth in the age 18 400 IM, sixth in the age 18 800m freestyle, seventh in the age 18 1500m freestyle, and fifth in the age 18 400m IM.
