Men’s 500 Yard Freestyle – Prelims

Emory freshman Kellen Stillman and Rowan senior John Tepper came to the wall together in the first heat, touching in 4:33.73 and 4:33.82, respectively. MIT junior Joshua Graves won heat 2 out of the outside lane with 4:30.94, improving his seed time by 3.3 seconds. Behind him were Kenyon junior Brooks McCoy (4:31.64) and his freshman teammate Fielding Fischer (4:31.79).

Denison junior Matthew Hedman held a two-body length lead over the field throughout the heat and got the wire-to-wire win in 4:26.44. Emory junior Thomas Gordon broke away from the group following Hedman, and touched second in 4:27.34. Denison sophomore James Baker was third in 4:29.71.

Heat 4 featured an exciting race between Kenyon freshman Tim Hagemeister and Johns Hopkins sophomore Brandon Fabian, who swam neck-to-neck and turned exactly together at the last turn. Hagemeister got his hand to the wall first, stopping the clock at 4:26.56 to Fabian’s 4:27.25. Denison senior Stuart Hohm made a move at the end and finished third in the heat with 4:27.77.

Thomas Gordon of Emory won the final heat in 4:27.34. Kenyon junior Robert Williams improved his seed time by 2.6 seconds and finished second (4:28.14) from lane 8. Third went to Taye Baldinazzo of Chicago (4:28.29). Top-seeded Griffith Otazu of Johns Hopkins added 4 and took fifth in the heat.

Denison sophomore Robert Williams came to play, and proved it with a 5-second drop in the first heat of men’s 200 IM to win with 1:49.57. NYU sophomore Giorgio DelGrosso dropped an even more impressive 10 seconds to finish second in the heat with 1:51.42.

Johns Hopkins senior Jan Hagemeister won heat 2 from the outside lane, clocking a 1:50.46 to improve his seed time by 2.3 seconds. Kenyon sophomore Colin Reardon, who dropped 1.4, finished just .20 behind Hagemeister. CMS sophomore Sam Willett took third in the heat with 1:52.49. Wash U. junior Jordan Wheeler had a big swim in heat 3, winning by over 2 seconds with 1:50.33 over Chicago freshman Keda Song (1:52.22).

UW-Eau Claire sophomore Collin Miller, who placed 10th in 2017, won the first circle-seeded heat with a best-by-2.4-seconds 1:48.21. Coming in behind Miller was NYU senior Ian Rainey (1:49.30), then the trio of Pomona-Pitzer’s Liam O’Shea (1:51.33), Tufts’ Zachary Wallace (1:51.35), and Chicago’s Lance Culjat (1:51.46). Kenyon senior Matthew Leenhouts edged the field in a very close heat 5; he came to the wall at 1:48.70, followed by Pomona-Pitzer senior Daniel To (1:49.03), Johns Hopkins junior Emile Kuyl (1:49.38), and Nebraska Wesleyan senior Garrett Cadotte (1:49.96), all of whom improved on their seed times.

Denison sophomore Robert Wang touched out Wash U. junior Kevin Van Cleave, 1:48.54 to 1:48.75, to win the final heat. Denison junior Bradley Stevenson was third with 1:49.74.

Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle – Prelims

Denison junior Brett Weicht opened the men’s 50 free heats with a .37 drop for 20.72, just touching out NYU senior Chad Moody (20.77). Bowdoin junior Karl Sarier dropped .80 for third in 20.84. Kenyon freshman David Fitch edged Hopkins sophomore Alexander Carson (20.65) and his teammate Michael Wohl (20.77). Widener sophomore Aaron Green and Pomona-Pitzer freshman Lukas Menkhoff both dropped .15 to tie for a heat 4 win with 20.43. Emory sophomore Sage Ono was just .05 behind with 20.48.

Tufts sophomore Roger Gu went 19.95 to win heat 5 by half a body length. Reilly Donnellan of UW-Stevens out-touched MIT senior Jeremy Bogle, 20.34 to 20.54, for second. Emory junior Trey Kolleck, seventh in this event in 2017, dropped 4/10 to win heat 6 over Stevens Point senior Jack Englehardt, 19.96 to 20.04. Englehardt was 6th last year.

Defending champion Oliver Smith of Emory took down the NCAA Division III record that had eluded him last year, going 19.37 to win the final heat over Isaac Casey of Loras (19.77). Smith erased a 2012 mark of 19.38 set by Zach Turk of Kenyon.
