Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kendall Bensen, a senior at Wando High School, has committed to swim at East Carolina University.

“I knew from the moment I stepped on campus and met the team, that ECU was the perfect choice. The energy and passion on this team in unlike any other and I can’t wait to be part of it. GO PIRATES!!”

Bensen lived in Washington until June 2021, when she moved to South Carolina. While in Washington, she was ASB president at Snohomish High School from January 2021 until her move.

She competed at the 2021 South Carolina High School Girls Championships for class 5A, where she finished 6th in the 100 back and 7th in the 500 free. Bensen also swims club for South Carolina Swim Club, and at the 2021 South Carolina LSC Senior State Championships, she finished 3rd in the 200 back, 4th in the 100 back, 10th in the 200 free, and 17th in the 400 free.

Bensen has USA Swimming Futures cuts in the 100 and 200 back. Her best short-course yards times are:

  • 200 free: 1:58.22
  • 500 free: 5:13.13
  • 100 back: 57.09
  • 200 back: 2:03.89

ECU is a member of the American Athletic Conference. This season, the women’s team was reinstated after being cut due to budget restraints. The last time ECU participated in conference championships was in 2020, where the women placed 4th out of six teams.

With her times, Bensen would already be the fastest 100 and 200 backstroker this season on the team, and her times would’ve earned her a spot in the B finals in both the 100 and 200 back at the 2021 AAC women’s championships. Other backstrokers in the program include current freshman Alayna Carlson and junior Polina Rukosuev.

Bensen joins 12 other recruits for the class of 2022. The huge recruit class might be due to ECU having a smaller team than usual, with their 2021-22 roster numbering only 15 swimmers, compared to 25 swimmers pre-COVID.
