Austin SC’s Lillian Benwell to Head West to San Diego for 2017-18

Lillian Benwell, a Leander, Texas-native and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, has given her verbal commitment to the University of San Diego Toreros for 2017-18.

“I chose USD because I immediately felt a connection with the team and coaching staff. USD is a perfect fit for my academic and athletic goals. I am excited about the program and look forward to swimming every day on a beautiful campus with an amazing and powerful group of women. Go Toreros!”

Benwell has been swimming with Austin Swim Club for the last year, after 8 years at Nitro, in order “to train with Brendan Hansen and an exceptionally talented group of female swimmers.  It’s been a fantastic decision and I am grateful for their support everyday [sic],” Benwell told SwimSwam. She specializes in breast, fly and IM, and competed in the 200m breast at Speedo Junior Nationals this past summer. She won the 100 fly and 200 IM at USA Swimming Futures Championships in Austin, and was an A-finalist in the 100/200m breast and 400m IM at Austin Sectionals.

Her best SCY times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:04.93
  • 200 breast – 2:17.36
  • 100 fly – 56.31
  • 200 IM – 2:04.97
  • 400 IM – 4:25.82

Benwell will help the Toreros from the minute she shows up to Alcalá Park. At the 2016 MPSF Championships, where only the A and B finals score, Benwell would have added points in the 100 breast (B final), 200 breast (A final), 200 IM (B final), and 400 IM (A final).
