- Night 1 live recap
As the dust settles after an electric first night of the 2025 NCAA Women’s Championships, we can pick apart the scoring results and see which teams are hitting their stride the hardest.
Relay disqualifications can be big make or breaks for teams point-wise, especially on night one where only relay events are contested. Fortunately, no teams were disqualified on either of tonight’s events, the 200 medley relay or the 800 free relay. Still, several teams experienced some big gains and losses.
Compared to the psych sheet scores, the Louisville Cardinals and the Arizona State Sun Devils were the biggest winners of the night. Perhaps the most impressive storyline is that ASU beat its total projected points for the entire meet, five, after the very first event. The Sun Devils secured a top eight finish in the 200 medley relay and earned 22 points. They also improved upon their 800 free relay time and finished just outside of scoring.
On the other side of the coin, the Tennessee Vols experienced the biggest loss compared to the psych score.
It’s also worth noting that no teams from west coast states, where the meet is being held, lost points compared to their psych score.

Florida only has 2 B finalists tonight…
So I like this, but I’ll be honest, it felt weird that UVA being -6 under was the same as UNC being -6 under since UVA could only do worse and UNC nearly completely failed to meet expectations. It also felt like Stanford performed the best given the relatively high expectations.
I wanted to just do a simple “performance index” that was the Actual score – psych score divided by possible points (80) – psych score.
The problem was that UVA gives a divide by zero since Max possible is 80 and they were scored out to 80 and 80-80 = 0 as we all know.
So I checked if a team was predicted to win everything and compared them… Read more »
I had been thinking, before Bob Bowman was chosen, that promoting Wyatt and bringing in Behm as Executive Speaker to Sprinters or some such title that only the Texas Athletic department could think of, for both men and women, would’ve been a good idea.
On Wisconsin! Bacon swimming fly!
I knew that banking on Tennessee to flop in my pickems would pay off. Works (almost) every time
It wasn’t “Just” Bob doing good things at ASU! Herbie is good…REALLY GOOD!
So Bob can’t coach a women’s team but Herbie can- noted
The BEHMSTER effect is in full force! ASU is doing great.
