Army Swimming Hires Tim Loeffler as Assistant Coach

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army swimming and diving head coach Mickey Wender continued to add to his coaching staff on Thursday as the Black Knights’ mentor tabbed Tim Loeffler as his newest assistant coach. Loeffler joins the Army staff after finishing a four-year stint as an assistant coach at Michigan State University.

“The Army swimming and diving family is very excited to welcome Coach Loeffler to West Point,” said Wender. “Tim has a wealth of experience as an athlete and coach that will enable him to have an immediate impact on our program. His results as a distance coach are very impressive and his experience as a recruiting coordinator in the Big Ten conference prepared him well for his role here at Army.

“Most importantly, Tim has the utmost respect and admiration for the members of our Armed Forces,” added Wender. “He understands that our role in mentoring the future leaders of America goes far beyond getting them faster in the pool. He is a great fit for West Point and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

While in East Lansing, Loeffler worked primarily with the Spartans’ middle distance and distance freestyle swimmers. He also coordinated MSU’s recruiting efforts, directed the program’s summer camps and helped monitor academic performance.

Several of the athletes Loeffler worked with went on to place at the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships. During his tenure, a number of Spartans broke varsity records and won multiple invitational titles. He also helped the Michigan State men’s team to a fourth-place finish at the U.S. Nationals this past winter. Additionally, during the summer of 2012, one of Loeffler’s swimmers reached the semifinals of the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Prior to arriving at Michigan State, Loeffler was a two-year letterwinner at the University of Minnesota. He also spent two seasons as a student assistant coach for the Gophers, serving in that role from 2007-09. During his time as a student assistant, Loeffler helped mold a number of Big Ten and NCAA Championship scorers.

From 2004-07 Loeffler competed for the Gophers and was a member of their 2005 Big Ten Championship team. He holds three top-20 times in Minnesota history in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle as well as the 200 butterfly. The Elmhurst, Ill., native graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Strategic and Analytical Communications.
