AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips swimming and diving team cruised to their first win of the season, claiming the 2022 Akron Zips Classic title with 1,612 total points at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Saturday.
After a dominant early session performance, Akron carried the momentum into the evening slate and received another meet record set by junior Madelyn Gatrall. Gatrall flew to the second fastest time in the NCAA in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:55.44 and broke the meet record set in 2018 by Avery Movold (1:57.90). Earlier in the day, Gatrall set a new meet record and second fastest NCAA DI time of 53.20 in the 100 Back, replacing her own meet standard set in 2021 (53.75).
The Zips opened the session by sweeping the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Gatrall, senior Sara Bozso, sophomore Abigail Daniel and senior Olivia Derodes delivered a 1:39.50 performance for gold. Senior Weronika Gorecka, junior Madeline Dyer, senior Rachel Schiffli and sophomore Kendall Craig touched second (1:41.96), while sophomore Rebecca Reid, senior Andrea Fischer, sophomore Rachel Sabotin and freshman Callie Parkes earned bronze (1:43.19).
Gatrall continued her winning ways by stopping the timer first in the 100-yard freestyle (50.14) and was followed by Derodes (51.23) and Schiffli (51.26) to complete the trifecta.
Akron swept the gold through bronze in the following two events as Bozso (2:15.78), junior Giovanna Cappabianca (2:18.19) and Fischer (2:18.40) finished one, two and three in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Zips followed by claiming the top three podium spots in the 200-yard butterfly as senior Gail Workman captured the win with a 2:04.55, followed by Sabotin (2:05.33) and senior Alyssa Riker (2:05.64).
Akron ended the meet with the top two finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Schiffli, Gatrall, Daniel and Gorecka earned the toop spot with a 3:23.40 time and freshman Hannah Trainer, Reid, Halvorsen and Parkes took silver with a 3:26.60 time.
Akron finished the meet with a 827-point advantage over the field followed by Bowling Green (785), Denison (687.5), Youngstown State (312) and Xavier (268.5).
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving scored 454 points in the early session of Saturday’s Akron Zips Classic, which ended with a record-breaking performance by junior Madelyn Gatrall in the 100-yard backstroke at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.
Gatrall posted the meet record in the 100 Back, while senior Weronika Gorecka touched second in the final event of the a.m. session as Akron established a 988.5-437.5 advantage over the second-place team, Denison.
Akron opened day two of the Akron Zips Classic with the trifecta, claiming the Top 3 positions of the 200-yard free style relay with 1:32.30, 1:34.34 and 1:34.77 times. The team of Gatrall, senior Rachel Schiffli, senior Olivia Derodes and sophomore Abigail Daniel seized the gold medal, while sophomore Julia Mauter, Gorecka, sophomore Rebecca Reid and freshman Callie Parkes claimed silver and junior Astrid Halvorsen, freshman Elle Couture, sophomore Kendall Craig and freshman Hannah Trainer finished with the bronze.
Daniel topped the podium in the 100-yard butterfly with a 54.23 time as five Zips finished the race in succession. Schiffli (54.57) finished second followed by Gorecka (54.73), Gatrall (55.83) and Reid (56.15). Senior Sara Bozso and junior Madeline Dyer continued the Zips winning ways, finishing first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:03.20 and 1:03.36 times, respectively.
AKRON, Ohio — Sophomore Madelyn Gatrall opened the season by swimming lead-off in the 400-yard medley relay and posted a 52.63 100-yard backstroke time as the Akron swimming and diving program hosted the Akron Zips Classic on Friday at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.
On day one of the 2022 Akron Zips Classic, Akron scored 534.5 points and holds a 293.5-point advantage over the field followed by Bowling Green (241), Denison (202.5), Youngstown State (113) and Xavier (65).
Senior diver Paige Kalik won the first event of the season, claiming the 1-meter diving event that featured 21 divers. Kalik scored 259.80 points, 30 points better than runner-up Grace Ellis from Bowling Green.
Akron also claimed the first swimming event as Gatrall was joined by senior Andrea Fischer, sophomore Abigail Daniel and senior Rachel Schiffli in the 400 MR that posted a 3:41.26 winning time.
The Zips swept the 200-yard individual medley as freshman Kendall Craig (2:03.50) claimed gold followed by junior Weronika Gorecka (2:03.75) and sophomore Rachel Sabotin (2:05.34).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Akron claimed the Top 5 spots as Schiffli (23.26) and Gatrall (23.26) won the race followed by Daniel (23.34), junior Olivia Derodes (23.63) and freshman Julia Mauter (23.92).
The Zips wrapped-up the first day with a back-to-back finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay with the team of Gorecka, freshman Elle Couture, Gatrall and Mauter taking gold with a 7:25.54. The runner-up squad consisted of junior Astrid Halvorsen, sophomore Rebecca Reid, Derodes and senior Gail Workman, 7:31.89.

Akron, Ohio – Highlighted by the men’s win with eleven event victories, the Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had an impressive season-opening performance at the two-day Akron Zips Classic that finished on Saturday at the Ocasek Natatorium.
The men opened the meet strong, winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.46. The winning squad was Soma Albert, James Slessor, Aleksa Radenovic, and Gavin Redden.
Radenovic picked up four individual event victories in the 200 IM, 100 fly, 100 back, and 200 fly. His time of 1:46.82 was a Zips Classic meet record. In the 200 IM, he swam a 1:51.81. He clocked a 48.33 in the 100 fly and a 49.86 in the 100 back.
Slessor, a freshman, earned two individual event victories in the 100 breast and 200 breast, with times of 55.59 and 2:03.91, respectively.
Rares Druga, Albert, and Dominic Bono also picked up event victories. Druga finished first in the 50 free, clocking a 20.77. He was also second in the 100 free, swimming a 46.28. Albert won the 200 back with a time of 1:48.73. Bono swam a time of 4:02.76 to finish first in the 400 IM and swam a 1:50.33 to finish second in the 200 back.
The men also won the 200 free relay with Druga, Gavin Redden, Radenovic, and Darren Laing, clocking a 1:24.13.
Cody Thill placed second in the men’s three-meter dive with a score of 233.40.
Gavin Webb finished second in the 500 free and 1650 free with times of 4:34.81 and 16:01.79, respectively. Christian Taylor placed third in the 500 free, clocking a 4:38.69.
Webb also placed second in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:03.84. Crispy Barton was just behind Webb in the 400 IM in third place with a time of 4:05.49.
Darren Laing earned a third-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 21.32. Albert finished third in the 100 back, clocking a 51.37. Redden swam a 46.38 to place third in the 100 free.
Freshman Brooks Adams was third in the one-meter dive with a score of 223.30.
For the women, freshman Miriam Frass had an impressive performance. She won the women’s 500 free clocking a 4:57.71, the third-fastest time in YSU history. She also placed second in the 1650 free with a time of 17:13.11. Frass also swam a 1:54.25 to place fifth in the 200 free.
Kayla Wrasman finished fifth in the one-meter dive with a score of 216.95. Tess Weiskopf scored a 207.30 to place sixth.
Hailey Clark swam a 17:35.64 in the 1650 free to place sixth.
In team scores, the men scored 1398.5 points to defeat Denison with 1092 points and Xavier with 926.5 points. The women scored 312 points while Xavier had 268.5. Akron finished with 1612 points, and Bowling Green had 785 while Denison finished with 687.5.
The Penguins will have a three-week break in competition before heading to Niagara Falls, N.Y to take on both Niagara and St. Francis (Pa.) at the Oxy Aquatic Center on Saturday, Oct. 29.
