Men’s Recap
DENVER – Air Force swam past Denver at the Sprint Eliminator Championships, 210.00-168.00, Saturday afternoon in the El Pomar Natatorium. The Falcons took the top spot in six events, including both relay races.
Air Force got off to a strong start in the 200 medley relay as Gabe Bartolomei, Tory Bartlett, Andrew Limpert and Corey Shepard clocked a first-place finish at 1:30.15. The 200 free relay team made up of Wen Zhang, Andrew Limpert, Jacob Bulseco and Corey Shepard swam to a first-place finish at 1:22.83. Teammates Adam Grimm, Joseph Moore, Jack McGrath and Stephen Zanowic finished third with a 1:24.71.
Air Force junior standout Wen Zhang took finished first in two events, winning the 200 freestyle (1:36.06) and 500 freestyle (4:32.06). Teammate Adam Grimm finished second behind Zhang in the 200 free with a 1:40.52.
The Falcons were exceptional in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle, winning the top-three spots in both events. Grant Afman led the way in the 50 butterfly with a (22.10), while teammates John Plutt (22.31) and Andrew Limpert (22.37) finished second and third, respectively.
In the 50 freestyle, it was Shepard who took the top-spot, clocking a 20.55 ahead of teammates Wen Zhang (20.64) and Andrew Limpert (20.72).
Air Force diver Alex Kenyon concluded the event with a pair of second-place finishes in the one-meter dive (308.10) and three-meter dive (341.63).
Other finishers in the top-three include Gabe Bartolomei (23.27) and Joseph Moore (23.67), finishing second and third, respectively, in the 50 backstroke. Tory Bartlett took second in 50 breaststroke (26.04). Moore and Grimm finished second (1:51.89) and third (1:51.95) in the 200 IM, respectively.
Next up, the Falcons play host at the Air Force Diving Invitational, Thursday to Saturday (Feb. 3-5), in Cadet Natatorium. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m. each day.
Swimming returns to action at the University of Denver for the Last Chance Invitational, February 11-12, at the El Pomar Natatorium. Action on Friday (Feb. 11) begins at 5 p.m., while swimming starts at 10:30 on Saturday.
Women’s Recap
DENVER – Air Force fell to Denver, 310.00-68.00, in the Denver Sprint Eliminator, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29) in the El Pomar Natatroium. The Falcons’ visit was highlighted by a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and a new season-best time for the 200 IM team.
The Falcons’ 200 IM relay team made up of Allana Clarke, Kimmy Woolfenden, Corbyn Cormack and Abby Turner, finished third in the event, but clocked a season-best time in doing so, posting a 1:42.43. The 200 free relay team finished third as Sefilina Maile, Abby Turner, Kara Gavin and Lia Campbell swam to a 1:36.21 finish.
Air Force junior Sefilina Maile took the top spot in the 50 freestyle, clocking a (23.49) for the second fastest time in the event by a Falcon this season and second only to her top time. Maile also posted a third-place finish in the 50 backstroke (26.01).
Cormack finished second in the 50 butterfly (25.40) and 200 IM (2:06.93). Teammate Alex Clark finished third behind Cormack in the 200 IM with a 2:08.35. The Falcons’ Sophie Boulware finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:06.77).
“The score didn’t come out the way we wanted today,” head coach Colleen Murphy said. “Our team is in an amazing place heading into our conference championships. Our 200 medley relay went our best time of the season and we had a ton of season bests across the board. We are very excited for the next couple of weeks.”

DENVER – The University of Denver Swim and Dive team closed out the Colorado Spring Championships home meet on Saturday at the El Pomar Natatorium. The Pioneers picked up a head-to-head win against Air Force on the women’s side.

Leckie and Remington led the way for the Pioneers, each picking up three wins as an individual or part of a relay team. Opalka had it going on her senior day, winning the 3m (297.23 points) and 1m (296.33 points) dive competitions.
For the men, Hassan notched two victories in the 3m (362.48 points) and 1m (396.80 points) dive.
DU heads up to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Diving Invite beginning on Feb. 3.
