The alleged bribery scandal involving executive-level officials within the Korean Swimming Federation (KSF) continues to develop, as Asian news source Yonhap is reporting that another KSF board member has been arrested.
The arrest stems from a mid-February raid on KSF offices by South Korean prosecutors. Citing concerns about corruption and misappropriation of funds within the KSF organization, prosecutors confiscated computer hard drives and sports industry-related project documents from the headquarters. The KSF was suspected of ‘forging documents and siphoning off expenses.’
What followed included an arrest of a federation official only identified by surname Jeong for allegedly having received bribes in turn for the selection of specific Korean athletes for major international competitions from 2010 to 2013.
Now prosecutors have arrested another board member, only identified by an initial ‘L’, on charges of allegedly embezzling money allocated to the KSF budget. The suspect was allegedly involved in exchanging money for favors with higher board members in an effort to keep his status and ‘peddle his influence’ in the selection of athletes. ‘L’ reportedly worked as a manager and coach of Korea’s National Water Polo Team on multiple occasions cine 2014.
Yonhap reports that the KSF could not be reached immediately for comment.
