As Open Water swimming begins in London soon, may we all remember Fran Crippen. He will always be remembered as a leader in the sport of Open Water Swimming, as well as for taking a stand to make sure the sport was safe for all. He not only was a USA National Swim Team member in the pool, but also was a world leader in Open water swimming.
As we all know, he was not just a tough trainer, and brave competitor. He was also the best teammate one could ask for – once swimming back in an open water race to make sure his friend was okay.
Also, he influenced the popularity of open water swimming, and the beauty of going after our dreams in endeavors in our lives.
At my highschool, Germantown Academy, Nelson Glendinning (with Coach Shoulberg’s blessings) created a beautiful mural in the pool area, so that everyone could always remember the positive impact Fran had and will continue to have on many.
As the Open water begins in London, may we all take a moment to appreciate who Fran was, and how he influenced others to bring out their true best (including the people who need to make safety an utmost priority in the sport of open water swimming – an issue Fran was working on before he passed on). I am sure there are many world-class athletes who will be swimming with Fran in their hearts and minds.
Best,
Katrina
