Kylie Masse Breaks Canadian Record By Full Second in 200 Back Semis

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The long-burning torch in Canadian women’s backstroke has now been fully passed to Kylie Masse. After breaking the World Record and winning gold in the 100 earlier in the meet, Maase has now broken the Canadian Record in the 200 back by almost a second.

She swam 2:05.97 in the semi-final to qualify 2nd behind only Australian Emily Seebohm (2:05.81) into Saturday’s finals. That broke Hilary Caldwell’s 2:06.80 from the 2013 World Championships, where she took bronze.

Maase’s previous best was a 2:07.23 from Canada’s World Championship Trials in April. She also threw up a warning earlier this month at the Ontario Summer Provincial Championships when she put in a 2:08.10. She’s improved in both Olympic backstroke distances this year, but the jump in the 200 (1.6 seconds) has been the biggest as compared to just .5 seconds in the 100 across the year.

Comparative Splits:

50m 100m 150m 200m Final Time
Masse Previous PB 30.15 32.58 31.89 32.61 2:07.23
Caldwell Old Canadian Record 30.70 31.53 32.33 32.24 2:06.80
Masse New Canadian Record 29.55 31.37 32.43 32.62 2:05.97

Masse used her speed to break the record, opening up 1.2 seconds better than Caldwell did when she set the record.

It’s actually her 3rd Canadian record. She broke the 50 record in semi’s with a 27.64, surpassing her own mark of 27.67 from Canadian trials in April
