Michael Andrew Enters 9 Events for World Champs Trials

2017 U.S. NATIONALS/WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TRIALS

Age group phenom Michael Andrew is known for his heavy event schedules. As psych sheets dropped for the 2017 U.S. Nationals/World Championships Trials, which will take place next week in Indianapolis, they revealed a 9-event schedule for the 18-year-old.

Andrew’s full event schedule is as follows: 50 free, 100 free, 50 back, 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast, 50 fly, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Last summer, Andrew was a finalist in the 100 breast at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, placing 4th overall and breaking the Junior World Record. That’s arguably his best shot of making the team, though he’d probably have to take at least a half second off his personal best 59.82 to do so.

Andrew also qualified for the 200 IM final at Olympic Trials, but scratched out to focus on the 50 free semis. He’s already set a best time in the 200 IM this season, putting up a quick 1:59.12 at the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series stop in Indianapolis. Andrew has the speed and versatility to do very well in the event, but his challenge will be matching the endurance of Kalisz and company.

Fail again this summer?

Um, is the headline either “crushed Jr Nats for the last time” (he’s 18, this was it, and he made sooo many events,”, or “failed to make the bigs, again, this summer like last summer” ?

Were he and his parents not projecting and hyping his dominance 4 years ago, it’d have been the first headline. Like Reese W (sp?), who’s quietly crushing it. As all of the talk – even this post – has been ‘the next Phelps’ (which looks like he’s not), the headline must be the fail.

I think best chance is 50 back

His best chances are in the 200 IM and maybe the 50 breaststroke.

I hope his coaches will be conservative and not try to overschedule him. He is a swim prodigy with his massive number of AG records.

He’s just a teenager and still learning to cope with the anxiety of elite competition.

Interested to see if he swims the 200 breast. 2:13 from last year is not bad, and considering he’s been putting in more reps in practice, he could have a very impressive swim. I wouldn’t say he’s a factor to make the team, but I’d still like to see him swim it.

A bit concerned about the 100 fly/50 breast double, as I think he has a very legitimate chance to win the 50 breast. As long as he can make top 8 in the breast after swimming the fly in prelims, I think he’ll be okay. He either won’t make finals in the 100 fly, or they’ll scratch finals so he can focus on the 50 breast.

Otherwise, not… Read more »

Remember when the media said he would be the next Phelps? I think he is trying to imitate him, but his event schedule really isn’t working out for him. He should just do the 50, 100 breastroke, and the 50 back. Maybe we would actually see him QUALIFY.

1) Entering every event does not mean he’ll swim every event.
2) He has multiple events on three days, but they all involve 50’s. We’ve seen Michael perform very consistently at 50 shootout type meets, so I am not super concerned about this. I doubt he’ll do finals of the 200 breast, so he’ll be fresh for the 50 fly at night. If it looks like he has a solid shot to make the team in the 50 breast, I doubt they’ll do the 100 fly at night. The 200 IM and 50 free are on the last day and both some of his better events, but his chances of making the team are undeniably better in the IM,… Read more »

actually MA’s parents have said on multiple occasions he could be the next Phelps…I know it’s not the same as MA saying it, but it’s more than just the media, and when you’re still a minor, for better or worse, what your parent(s)/coach says is going to be lumped in

Many make it out to be such a big deal when Phelps’ Nag records were broken, but he had massive improvements at the age of 15, something Michael Andrew did not have. People are also faster than 15 years ago.

Why the 50 back? Out of everything he’s swimming I can’t help but feel that is one of his least likely events to make the team in.

I believe the 50 back is a relatively open event in the men’s side. MA’s best time is 25.1 from 2015. Grever’s best is 24.5 from 2013, Plummer is gone and who knows what Murphy will be able to do. With a reasonable drop, 24.6 might win that event.
