Konrad Czerniak took the men’s 100 freestyle by over a second and a half on the third and final day of the Spanish Short Course Championships. Czerniak posted a winning time of 46.76 beating the meet record of 47.28 set by Matias Aguilera in 2009 and well ahead of Miguel Ortiz-Canavate who finished second in a time of 48.40.
His time now puts him second in the world rankings with only Australian Cameron McEvoy having swum faster.

Ortiz-Canavate did get his revenge on Czerniak in the men’s 50 butterfly where he took the win in a time of 22.93, which places him sixth in the world rankings. Czerniak finished second in a time of 23.32.
Mireia Belmonte took her fifth and sixth event of the competition winning the women’s 800 freestyle and 200 IM. Belmonte took the 800 freestyle in a time of 8:14.81, which places her second in the world rankings. She was followed by Melanie Costa who posted an 8:18.51 putting her sixth in the world rankings.

Belmonte won the 200 IM in a time of 2:09.54. In the same event three age group records were set. 17 year old Africa Zamorano posted a time of 2:11.52, 13 year old Nadia Gonzalez finished in a time of 2:16.23 while 12 year old Paula Juste Sanchez put up a 2:18.51.
Gonzalez also set a new age group record in the women’s 100 backstroke finishing in a time of 1:02.44. Duane Da Rocha won the event in a time of 58.98.
Aschwin Wildeboer took the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 51.30. In the same event 16 year old Hugo Gonzalez set a new age group record finishing in a time of 53.53.
Marc Sanchez won the men’s 800 freestyle in a time of 7:41.45. 16 year old Cesar Castro broke his third age group record of the competition posting a time of 7:50.00.
