4 Upsets, 4 Overtime Contests Lead Women’s Water Polo Week 8 Results

Four upsets and four overtime victories highlighted the results on Week 8 of the collegiate women’s water polo season.

RV Brown was involved in two of the upsets, first falling to Salem 13-12 and then rebounding with an 11-8 victory over #24 Marist.

The Red Foxes also were part of two upsets, taking down #17 Harvard 12-11 in overtime before falling to Brown.

One of the overtime affairs extended to three extra periods, as Saint Francis (Pa.) outlasted Redlands 10-9 in sudden death.

The week included three Top 10 matchups. #2 UCLA dominated #8 Cal on the road, winning 11-5 on Saturday thanks to two goal efforts by Val Ayala, Ava Johnson, Katrina Drake and Roxy Wheaton.

The other two affairs were much closer, with #2 Stanford edging #6 Arizona State 9-8 and #5 UC Irvine outdoing #8 Cal 9-7 on Sunday. Hannah Shabb paced Stanford with five goals, while Tara Prentice notched four goals to lead the Anteaters to victory.

Upsets

  •  #15 Long Beach State def. #10 UC San Diego 6-4: The teams were tied at 3 after three quarters of play as Grace Pevehouse powerplay (3:24) and Tera Richardson (2:25) knotted the score for the Tritons. The teams traded goals to start the fourth period with Sarah Barker giving LBSU the edge (7:41) and Pevehouse answering (6:37). A Gabriella Matafora-Adams powerplay accounted for the eventual game winner for the 49ers (3:07). Barker iced the win with her third goal of the game (0:29). Barker led all scorers with the hat trick, while Pevehouse paced UCSD with two goals.
  • Salem def. RV Brown 13-12 – Brown led 3-1 after the first eight minutes, but Salem charged back to take a 5-4 lead with 3:45 to play in the second stanza on a Courtney O’Shaughnessy goal. The Bears ended the half with scores by Carissa Perez (1:43) and Claire Pisani (0:07) to go ahead 6-5. Down 7-6 with 5:32 to go in the third quarter, the Tigers scored four straight goals care of Beatrice Popescu (4:07), O’Shaughnessy (2:57, 2:23) and Maryanna Antoniou (0:45) to vault ahead 10-7. An Erin Zappia penalty put Salem up four at 13-9 with 4:06 remaining. Katie Dvonch scored three in a row for Brown (powerplay 3:30, 2:45 and powerplay 0:16), but could not complete the comeback bid. O’Shaughnessy and Chloe Woodbine each logged hat tricks for Salem, while Dvonch put in five goals for Brown.
  • #24 Marist def. #17 Harvard 12-11 OT – Anias Mathes and Viktoria Orlova scored four goals apiece to pace the Red Foxes in the upset win, while Sofia Carrera-Justiz put in three goals in the losing effort for the Crimson. Harvard led 8-4 with 6:39 to play in the third quarter and boasted a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth. Mathes scored twice and Carolyn Gauvin added a third to tie it up at 9 with 3:36 to play. A Myriam Lizotte goal gave Marist the edge at 10-9, but a penalty shot by Brooke Hourigan with 53 ticks left sent the game to overtime. Harvard scored in the first extra period care of Olivia Price, but the Red Foxes countered with two scores – Gauvin (2:21) and Lizotte (0:48) – in the second overtime to steal away the win.
  • RV Brown def. #24 Marist 11-8 – Linnea Kelly and Claire Pisani logged hat tricks for Brown, while Viktoria Orlova and Kathryn McCullough paced Marist with two goals apiece. Down 2-1, Brown scored four straight goals, capped by a Dagmara Czajka goal which gave the Bears a 5-2 lead early the second stanza. Marist cut the margin to one at 6-5, but Zoe King gave Brown a 7-5 halftime lead. Brown outscored Marist 3-0 in the third quarter to go up 10-5 and the Bears boasted an 11-6 lead with 5:06 to play. Marist attempted a comeback, pulling within three with 3:17 to go and scoring its final goal with three seconds to play.

Overtime

  • #8 UC Santa Barbara def. #21 Cal State Northridge 9-8 OT – Northridge boasted a 5-2 halftime lead after outscoring the Gauchos 4-1 in the second stanza. UC Santa Barbara trailed 7-4 heading into the final eight minutes, but Mollie Simmons (6:13, 4:20) and Sarah Snyder (2:31) pulled the Gauchos even at 7-all. After Kate Coski gave UCSB the 8-7 lead with 1:13 to go, McKenzie Beardsley capitalized on a power play with 35 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Neither team scored in the first extra period. Snyder scored the game winner with 1:26 remaining in the second overtime. Amanda Legaspi paced UCSB with three goals, while Madasonne Butler managed a hat trick for the Matadors.
  • #24 Marist def. #17 Harvard 12-11 OT
  • Saint Francis (Pa.) def. Redlands 10-9 SD – The Redlands Bulldogs led 5-3 at the half only to see the Red Flash turn the tables and outscore them 5-3 over the next 16 minutes. Saint Francis drew even at 6 on a Carissa Semple powerplay goal with 45 seconds left in the third quarter and took the lead with 7:43 to play in regulation, care of Camille Lyter. Redlands countered with scores by Alyssa Baratelle (7:34) and Katelynn Holloman (powerplay 4:36) to regain the edge at 8-7. Taylor Halbauter made good on a powerplay with 2:58 left to force overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Holloman broke the ice (1:27) only to be followed 24 seconds later by Saint Francis’ Bre Dupperon (1:03). Halbauter ended the game just 20 seconds into sudden death (2:40). Halbauter, Abbie Carter and Semple scored twice each for SFU, while Holly Kvanvig notched a hat trick for Redlands.
  • Whittier def. St. Francis Brooklyn 11-10 OT – The Terriers led 2-0 in the first quarter, but goals by Ally Burke (1:28) and Sawyer Bellville (6:30, 2nd) tied it up for the Poets. The teams tied seven more times in regulation, last at 9-all, when Burke scored with 2:58 to go. Bellville put Whittier up 10-9 (1:43) in the first overtime and Burke added the eventual gamewinner with 2:37 to go in the second extra stanza. Thea Simpson had St. Francis within one with 1:38 to play, but that would be the last shot for the Terriers. Bellville, Burke and Natasha Velez each put in three goals for Whittier, while Emma Leto scored four times for SFC.

Why is Stanford not as dominant as previous years? Did some players take a red shirt year to train with the national team? If so, who are they?
