After a season where 17-second splits in the 50 free began to feel less like sci-fi and more like the creeping new normal, there were only two on Thursday evening in the 200 free relay: both from the University of Tennessee.
The Volunteer front-half of Jordan Crooks (17.82) and Gui Caribe (17.81) put up a 35-second front-half, the best front-half in history to give Tennessee a big early lead en route to a winning time and Championship Record of 1:12.83.
Even without the benefit of a relay start, Crooks’ 17.82 was the second-best split of the entire field.
The two 17-second relay splits on Thursday were actually fewer than the three that went on the board on Wednesday in the 200 medley relay, where there were far fewer opportunities. That perhaps shows the difference in fatigue from the 50 freestylers, who had to swim the individual event on Thursday but, by definition, were all in their first race of the meet on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the sub-18 second splits were Chris Guiliano (17.80) of Texas, Crooks (17.67), and Jonny Kulow (17.78) of Arizona State.
There is a confounding factor that many of the anchors from Wednesday led off on Thursday. See the table comparing anchors from Wednesday to their splits from Thursday. Note that among those who dropped, Guy Brooks of Louisville didn’t swim an individual event on Thursday, nor did Wisconsin’s Cooper Scharff. Many of the rest didn’t final in the 50 free.

Besides all of that, below are the 200 free relay split rankings from Thursday.
A few other splits to highlight include Hubert Kos of Texas rolling an 18.56; he didn’t swim this race for Arizona State last year as he wasn’t needed in the deep Sun Devil sprint crew. He split 18.70 at SECs and has never flat-started the event, though a long course 23.25 from 2021 shows his talent in the event.

If I’m correct, all of the winning 200 free relay members, as well as the podium (top 3) for the 50 free, are all of African descent. A great moment for the sport!
Normally stuff like this I couldn’t be bothered with but the Tennessee sprint squad has a such a great story and chemistry together and it’s really fun to watch. Had ASU beating them in 2 FRR but glad they proved me wrong
I find ASU’s drop of almost 8/10 of a second from their seed time and 2nd place finish significant!!
They are proving the doubters wrong.
Kos’s range and versatility goes a little unnoticed due to what some absoulte juggernauts accomplished (*cough that sounds like Marchand*), but 18:5 in the 50 free to 3:35 in the 400IM is pretty crazy.
Remember that both Kos and Marchand are trained by Bob Bowman! Who also Michael Phelps’ old coach. Many top swimmers Bob has some kind of magic that brings out the best in swimmers. By the way Hubert Kos’s entire family over from Hungary was sitting in the front row in the Texas section.
Texas using a 100 backstroker, a 200 backstroker, and a 200 freestyler alongside Chris Giuliano for this relay is funny. Hopefully will see more 50/100 free guys on this relay next year
The problem is Texas hasn’t recruited and developed a blue chip sprint free recruit since 2017-18 range?
Krueger fell off after freshman year I remember rowdy saying he could challenge Dressel’s 39.90 in the upcoming years in 2019. Kibler also comes to mind but he would’ve succeeded anywhere he’s that good at swimming and made the Olympics training with children at Carmel.
