The Greater Spartanburg YMCA wrapped up the 2024 YMCA Summer National Championships by taking the combined and boy’s team titles. Meanwhile, The Greater Somerset YMCA claimed the girl’s team title.

Greater Spartanburg saw its first victory of the night with Hayden Penny claiming the girl’s 200 IM by over 2 seconds. Penny finished in a time of 2:18.07, dropping over 1.5 seconds off of her best time entering the meet (2:19.68). Including this event, Penny, who is committed to swim at the University of Kentucky, won three events over the duration of the meet. She previously won the 800 freestyle and 200 backstroke, also taking 2nd place in the 400 IM and 4th place in the 400 freestyle.
Connor Johnson from the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA won the boy’s 200 IM, narrowly taking down YMCA of the Triangle Area’s John Reese Taylor. Johnson posted a time of 2:05.29, cutting over 4 seconds off of his pervious best (2:09.74). Taylor also had an impressive swim, slicing 6.5 seconds off of his personal best (2:12.46) en route to a time of 2:05.95. Taylor will be joining the University of Cincinnati this fall, while Johnson is committed to Virginia Tech for 2025.
In the girl’s 50 freestyle, Katie Lawrence completed the sprint sweep after winning the 100 earlier in the week. Lawrence, from the
Wyckoff Family YMCA, dropped a time of 26.36 for the victory. Ethan Vance won the boy’s edition of the event, with the University of Missouri commit posting a 22.87 for the win, just off of his 22.69 from prelims. Vance swims for the Jefferson City Area YMCA.
The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA won the girl’s 400 medley relay by over a second with the team of Vicky Sluk, Alexia Davies, Anna Kilponen, and Serena Dickey combining for a final time of 4:16.65, improving 4 seconds on their prelims time. Davies posted a great 1:12.62 breaststroke split for the team, coming in over a second under her time from the individual 100 breaststroke (1:13.71).
In the boy’s 400 medley relay, the Triangle Area YMCA held out for a win against Greater Somerset County. The Triangle Area team of Ryan West, Tayloe, Eli Edmondson, and Axel Mori threw down a time of 3:50.59, with Greater Somerset finishing just behind with a 3:50.91. Both teams saw improvements on their prelims times with their performances.
Earlier in the day, Katie Pestrichelli from Greater Somerset County and Cody Lonsberry from the Indian Valley Family YMCA claimed wins in the girl’s and boy’s 1500 freestyle, respectively. Pestrichelli, a Boston University Commit, posted a time of 17:18.09, clearing the field by over 4 seconds and dropping over 14 seconds off of her best time (17:32.73). Lonsberry saw a similar drop off of his personal best (16:19.77) as he finished in a time of 16:04.54. However, his race was significantly closer as Nathan Spetz was right with him through the entire 1500 meter race, only coming up .06 behind Lonsberry, touching just behind in a 16:04.60.
