For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, and “Downs” to swimmers in the B final. At the Pac-12 men’s meet, only the A and B finals are scored.
*NOTE: This report does not include relays.*
Swimmers competed in the first preliminary session today at the 2018 Men’s Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Washington. This morning featured the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. After last night’s relays, USC still holds a slight lead over Cal, with Stanford very close behind in 3rd. The Trojans got a head start with their diving lead, but the Bears and Cardinal are in position to move ahead tonight.
We should see a very close battle forming between Stanford and Cal, as each have 10 A finalists tonight. Stanford has 5 B finalists to Cal’s 2, but the Bears are the favorites in the 200 free relay at the end of the session. The Cardinal is stacked in distance. The Bears are stacked in the 50 free. Both are equally stacked in the 200 IM, with the A final consisting of 4 Cal men and 4 Stanford men. Tonight’s team battle should be very interesting.
